Quakers Dealt First Loses to Close Cougar Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

DANVILLE, Va. -- The Guilford College volleyball team moved to 2-2 on the season after dropping a pair of matches to N.C. Wesleyan (3-1) and Averett (3-0) on Saturday.

N.C. Wesleyan L, 3-1 (25-18, 25-22, 18-25, 25-21)

The first set of the matchup was super competitive, seeing multiple ties in the early goings. North Carolina Wesleyan was able to establish a little bit of a lead, thanks in part to a 6-point run, and never trailed again.

Set two had a different energy, as Guilford was able to lead for 13 straight series. Despite the Battling Bishops eventually taking control, the stanza still remained highly competitive.

It was the third set where the Quakers' talents shined, as they were able to establish themselves and force an N.C. Wesleyan timeout. They were able to maintain a nice 3-plus point cushion for a majority of the set. Cam Blankenship helped to put the set away, as she contributed 2 of the last three points on a kill and a service ace, making a fourth set inevitable.

N.C. Wesleyan was able to open a little lead for itself in the final set, until a three point run breathed a little life into the Guilford squad, seeing a close score of 18-17. The pair remained close throughout, until GC was undone by a trio of errors.

Kaitlin Kelley was big on offense, contributing a team-best 11 kills. Blankenship and Adison Needham were close behind, posting tallies of 8 and 9, respectively.

Rookie Maddi Page continues to contribute on both sides of the ball, owning 36 assists and 14 digs.

Vanessa Johnson led her squad in blocks with four (2 solo, 2 assists).

Averett L, 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-18)

Despite the score being knotted at 3-3 at one point, the hosts were able to take control rather quickly, leading to a 10-point lead at one time. Guilford was able to prolong the set however, piecing together a 5-point run to push the score to 24-18, capitalizing on the opposition's errors.

The second and third sets read much the same, the Quakers were close, but were just unable to pounce on the Cougars.

Needham had the best GC performance, owing eight kills and a team-best four block assists.

Guilford College's home-opener will take place on Wednesday as it hosts cross-town rival Greensboro College for a 7 p.m. contest.
