DANVILLE Va. - The Guilford College volleyball team (0-2-0, 0-0-0 ODAC) fought hard, but ultimately fell in three sets (25-19, 25-10, 25-20) to Greensboro College (1-1-0, 0-0-0 USA South) to open the 33rd Annual Cougar Classic.
The Quakers made 29 kills, 27 assists, 26 digs, and three aces, while hitting .175 across the three sets. Greensboro posted 37 kills, 33 assists, 27 digs, and 13 aces while hitting .289. Guilford held the edge at the net with three blocks to Greensboro's two, but the Pride's advantage in kills and serving helped produce the 3-0 result.
Chrisbel Alcántara (San Juan, Puerto Rico), Olivia Roberts (Claremont, Calif.), and Maiya Yeaton (Colorado Springs, Colo.) shared the team lead with five kills each, while Jillian Mapes (Hodges, S.C.) led the Quakers with nine assists and Vivian Cavataio (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) paced the defense with nine digs. Ashlin Paul (Hampstead, N.C.) and Jayanna Spurgeon (Duncan, S.C.) each contributed two blocks, while Alcántara, Haley Pasour (Winterville, N.C.), and Yeaton each recorded an ace.
Guilford came out swinging in the opening set, recording 13 kills against just one attack error to hit .462. The teams went back and forth trading points, and despite multiple three-point runs in the middle of the set by the Quakers, they could not take the lead in the first set, falling 25-19.
The second set proved to be the toughest stretch for the Quakers as Greensboro pulled away for a 25-10 win. The Pride committed no attacking errors while recording 14 kills and hitting .483. A four-point run for the Quakers showed promise of a comeback, but the Pride held strong.
The Quakers bounced back offensively in the third set, having eight kills to Greensboro's 6, but the Pride used a 6-1 run to create separation and close out the match, 25-20.
The Guilford College volleyball team returns to action tomorrow, September 5 for day two of the 33rd Annual Cougar Classic. Match one is set for 11:00 AM against Bob Jones University, followed by a 1:00 PM game against Salem College.
