GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Guilford College volleyball team (1-4-0, 0-0-0 ODAC) battled Greensboro College (4-1-0, 0-0-0 USA South) but ultimately fell in three sets (25-16, 26-24, 25-15) Wednesday evening at Hanes Gymnasium.
The Quakers finished with 22 kills, 22 assists, 32 digs, six aces, and eight blocks while hitting .033 across the three sets. Greensboro recorded 33 kills, 31 assists, 46 digs, nine aces, and seven blocks while hitting .170. Guilford held the advantage in bocks, but Greensboro's edge in kills, digs, and serving helped the Pride secure the 3-0 victory.Â
Maiya Yeaton (Colorado Springs, Colo.) led the Quakers with eight kills, while Olivia Roberts (Claremont, Calif.) added seven kills and a team-high five blocks. Jillian Mapes (Hodges, S.C.) paced the offense with 12 assists, while Vivian Cavataio (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) led the defense with eight digs. Haley Pasour (Winterville, N.C.) led Guilford with three aces, while Makenna Brown (Elizabethtown, Ky.) added two.
The Quakers struggled to find their rhythm offensively in the opening set, recording five kills against seven attack errors. Greensboro jumped out to an early advantage, and used its .333 hitting percentage to pull away, taking the first set, 25-16.
Guilford responded with its strongest offensive performance of the match in the second set, recording 10 kills while hitting .184. The Quakers battled Greensboro throughout the set, with neither team able to create significant separation. Guilford fought off multiple opportunities for the Pride to close out the set before Greensboro ultimately took the 26-24 lead.
The third set saw the Quakers record seven kills while Greensboro countered with six. Guilford stayed within striking distance early, but the Pride used a late run to create separation and closed out the match with a 25-15 third-set victory.
The Guilford College volleyball team returns to action Friday, September 11, when the Quakers travel to take on Brevard College at 7:00 PM.
