RALEIGH, N.C. - The Guilford College volleyball team (2-7-0, 0-0-0 ODAC) wrapped up the Raleigh Invitational Saturday, falling to Sewanee (2-4-0, 0-0-0 SAA) in three sets before dropping a four-set match to William Peace University (4-4-0, 0-0-0 USA South). The Quakers finish the weekend with one win across four matches at the Raleigh Invitational.
GAME ONE
Guilford finished the opening match with 20 kills, 19 assists, 43 digs, one ace, and six blocks while hitting -.009. Sewanee recorded 41 kills, 36 assists, 62 digs, eight aces, and seven blocks while hitting .209. Chrisbel Alcántara (San Juan, Puerto Rico) led the Quakers with six kills, while Olivia Thorne (Huntersville, N.C.) added five and Olivia Roberts (Claremont, Calif.) recorded three. Makenna Brown (Elizabethtown, Ky.) and Hailey Kennedy each recorded five assists, while Karly Peacock (Honolulu, Hawaii) led Guilford with seven digs.
Sewanee opened the match with a strong offensive effort, recording 13 kills while Guilford managed five while hit -.083. Despite a four point run for the Quakers before the final Tigers point, Sewanee came away with the 25-18 win.
The Tigers continued their momentum in the second set, recording 15 kills, and having multiple six-point runs to keep the lead on the Quakers. Sewanee took set two, 25-13.
The Quakers put together a strong offensive performance in the third set, recording eight kills, but GC was limited to a -.025 hitting percentage. The teams traded points back and forth, but a four-point run gave the Tigers the 25-14 set win, ending the match.
GAME TWO
In the second game of the day, Guilford finished with 30 kills, 29 assists, 53 digs, four aces, and five blocks while hitting .053. William Peace recorded 50 kills, 45 assists, 71 digs, nine aces, and six blocks while hitting .256.
Alcántara led Guilford with eight kills, while Ashlin Paul (Hampstead, N.C.) added seven and Thorne recorded six. Jillian Mapes (Hodges, S.C.) led the offense with 15 assists, followed by Brown with 13. Chloe Lynch (Winston-Salem, N.C.) paced the defense with 10 digs, while Vivian Cavataio (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) and Brown each added eight. Haley Pasour (Winterville, N.C.) led the Quakers with four blocks and three aces.
Guilford took an early lead in the first set on a seven-point run, before trading points back and forth with the Pacers throughout the first set. When William Peace came within two points of the Quakers, GC answered with a five-point run to end the first set, winning 25-18.
The Pacers responded in the second set, hitting .619 and recording 14 kills. Guilford recorded eight kills, but was held to a .000 hitting percentage as William Peace evened the match with a 25-10 win.
William Peace continued its offensive momentum in the third set, with back-to-back eight and seven-point runs in the middle of the set, allowing only 10 total points for the Quakers.Â
Guilford battled in the fourth set, with a goof run in the middle of the set, but it wasn't enough to catch up with the Pacers, who ended the game with a 25-16 victory.
The Quakers host their home opener on Wednesday, September 16 at 7:00 PM. GC will face off against Hollins University in the Ragan-Brown FieldHouse.
