DANVILLE, Va. - The Guilford College volleyball team (1-2-0, 0-0-0 ODAC) returned for day two of the 33rd Annual Cougar Classic, splitting their games on the day, beating Bob Jones University (1-5-0, 0-0-0 DII South Region NCCAA) in three sets before falling to Salem College (2-1-0, 0-0-0 USA South) 3-1.

GAME ONE
The Quakers finished match one with 29 kills, 24 assists, 37 digs, 12 aces, and five blocks while hitting .235. Bob Jones recorded 24 kills, 21 assists, 36 digs, five aces, and four blocks while hitting .011. Guilford also held the advantage in points, 46-33 and committed just 10 attack errors compared to the Bruins' 23.
 
Chrisbel Alcántara (San Juan, Puerto Rico), Olivia Roberts (Claremont, Calif.), and Maiya Yeaton (Colorado Springs, Colo.) led the Quakers will five kills apiece, while Makenna Brown (Elizabethtown, Ky.) paced Guilford with six assists and a match-high five aces. Sheryangelis Cay Barbosa (Juncos, Puerto Rico) led the defense with six digs and added four aces. Haley Pasour (Winterville, N.C.) and Roberts each recorded three blocks, while Yeaton added two.
 
Guilford controlled the opening set from the service line, using six aces to help build separation through the opening set. The Quakers and Bruins each had nine kills, but with three fewer attack errors, and hitting .161 compared to .065, Guilford pulled away late to secure the opening set, 25-19.
 
The second set featured another strong effort from Guilford as the Quakers recorded 11 kills, hitting .226. Bob Jones matched Guilford with 11 kills but committed seven attack errors, allowing the Quakers to maintain control and close out the set 25-18.
 
The Quakers played their strongest set last, hitting .368 with nine kills and just two errors. Guilford's defense limited Bob Jones to four kills and nine attack errors, resulting in a -.200 hitting percentage, allowing the Quakers to finalize the game with a 25-12 third set.
 
GAME TWO
In the second game of the day, the Quakers finished with 48 kills, 46 assists, 68 digs, three aces, and three blocks, while hitting .146. Salem recorded 60 kills, 58 assists, 74 digs, nine aces, and five blocks while hitting .280.
 
Olivia Roberts led Guilford with nine kills, while freshmen Olivia Thorne (Huntersville, N.C.) and Jayanna Spurgeon (Duncan, S.C.) each added seven. Makenna Brown led the offense with 17 assists, followed by Jillian Mapes (Hodges, S.C.) with 15. Chloe Lynch (Winston-Salem, N.C.) paced the defense with 13 dis, while Sheryangelis Cay Barbosa added 12. Haley Pasour and Ashlin Paul (Hampstead, N.C) each recorded two blocks.
 
Despite recording 15 kills in the opening frame, Salem took the set 25-16 hitting .289 with just one attacking error.
 
The second set proved to be the toughest for the Quakers as Salem recorded 16 kills without an attack error and hit .516. The Spirits took the set 25-9.
 
Guilford responded in the third set, holding Salem to a .068 hitting percentage while steadily going back and forth with Salem for the entire frame. The Quakers were able to extend the match and take the point, 27-25.
 
The Quakers recorded a match-best 14 kills in the fourth set and hit .282, but Salem answered with 16 kills while hitting .324 to close out the match, 25-18.
 
The Guilford College volleyball team travels across town to Greensboro College on Wednesday, September 7. The match is set to begin at 7:00 PM against the Pride.
