HOW IT HAPPENED
The contest opened with a Guilford College lead, but errors from both made it close in the early goings. GC was able to post 7-straight points to force a SC timeout, as the scoreboard read 12-4. The Spirits came out of the timeout with a little more energy, but not enough to tear down the cushion the Quakers had built, as the host posted three straight points on kills by Faith Fennell and Adison Needham to close out the set.
Salem recorded the first two-points of the set, but Guilford answered quickly on
kills by Hannah Stout and Cam Blankenship. The score remained close as the pair traded blows, but six-straight points by the visitors put some distance between them, 18-14. The run came to an end on a huge block by Devyn Norman and Kaitlyn Kelley, one that made the gym erupt in excitement. The action was just a little too late, as the opposition came away with a 25-19 win to force a fourth set.
The third set opened in favor of the Spirits as they were able to open up a 10-3 lead and force a Guilford College timeout. The break gave the hosts some momentum and forced errors on behalf of Salem, forcing it to use a timeout of its own. The Quakers excelled behind several three-point runs, with the set point coming off a Faith Fennell kill, assisted by Maddi Page, 25-21.
The final set opened with a Salem point, but quickly shifted in favor of Guilford as it posted eight-straight points, four on Page service aces. A series of Spirits' errors forced them to call a timeout at 17-5. They attempted a comeback, but to no avail, as kills by Stout and Kelley helped to claim the set 25-11, for the Quakers first match win since Sept. 3.
