GREENSBORO, N.C. - Guilford College's Amy Steller notched a career-high 21 points in the Quakers' 69-61 victory over Denison University in the first day of the Guilford College Classic Saturday afternoon. Lynchburg College claimed the first game of the day by defeating Stevens Institute of Technology, 75-65.

Guilford pulled out to a fast start in the first quarter, claiming a lead as large as nine near the end of the period thanks to 16 points off Denison turnovers. Denison followed with a 10-2 run spanning from the 52-second mark of the first quarter to the 4:35 mark in the second period. The Big Red finished the half with 19 turnovers, but held the Quakers to just four points off of turnovers in the second frame. The Quakers fought off four lead changes and three ties in the final 6:18 of the period to enter halftime with a two-point lead.

Guilford held to the lead in the third quarter as the Quakers continued a mini 6-0 run carried over from end of the second quarter to bring the advantage back to four points. Guilford gained momentum in the latter part of the period, growing their lead to eight as Steller drained a three-pointer with 1:18 remaining. Eight second-chance points lifted the Quakers as Guilford rebounded from losing the battle on the glass, 25-14, in the first half.

The Quakers extended their lead back to nine with 7:13 left, but Denison countered with a 12-0 run leading up to the 1:39 mark when Steller's two free throws broke the ice. An Anais Weatherly go-ahead three-pointer with 1:06 remaining gave the Quakers the advantage for good as Guilford produced a 10-0 run in 1:03 to pull away from the Big Red.

Steller shot six-of-14 from the field and seven-of-eight from the foul line to reach her career-high in scoring. Weatherly notched her third double-double in as many games and narrowly missed a triple double with 14 points, 11 rebounds, and nine steals. Lauren Ramsey was the remaining Quaker in double-figures with 12 points while adding four assists.

Kellie Arter led the Big Red with 15 points on five-of-12 shooting, sinking all field goals from beyond the arc. Jordan Holmes amassed a double-double with 11 points and 17 rebounds while blocking five shots. Lucy Bancone came off the bench to score 13 points.

Guilford cashed 32 Big Red turnovers into 33 points compared to 11 Denison points off 15 Guilford turnovers. The Big Red held the edge on the glass, 40-36, but the Quakers took the advantage on second-chance points, 14-9, while leading in offensive rebounds, 18-13.

Denison shot 41.5 percent for the contest, including 44.4 percent second-half shooting. Guilford shot 33.3 percent, but finished 21-of-27, 77.8 percent, from the foul line.

In the first contest of the afternoon, Lynchburg's Caroline Naumann led all scorers with 19 points while Olivia Defrancesco added with 18 points. Stevens' Kaitlyn Astel led the Ducks with 16 points while the team shot 47.5 percent compared to the Hornets' 41.5 percent. Lynchburg's ten three-pointers powered the Hornets while only yielding one three-point basket to the Ducks.

The Guilford College Classic concludes tomorrow with the Quakers facing Stevens at 2 p.m. Lynchburg faces Denison in the day first contest at noon.
