Guilford's Bumgarner Tabbed for WBCA Coaching Program

Greensboro, N.C. (2/6/09) -- Guilford College senior Brittany Bumgarner is one of 54 students chosen for the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) seventh annual So You Want To Be A Coach Program. The two-and-a-half day workshop will be held in conjunction with the WBCA's National Convention and the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Final Four April 3-7 in St. Louis, Mo.

Bumgarner joins former teammate Jennifer King '06 as Guilford participants in the program. King is in her third year an assistant women's basketball coach for neighboring Greensboro College.

Candidates for the program must be nominated by their head coach and have exhausted their final season of basketball eligibility at a four-year institution or have graduated within the past year. Participants were selected based on their academics, contributions to women's basketball on and off the court, professional resume and a written recommendation from their head coach.

Bumgarner is a four-year letter winner and two-time captain for coach Stephanie Flamini's Quakers. The shooting guard is a three-time Academic All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) honoree and was named Guilford's Outstanding Sport Management Major in 2008. She works in Guilford's sports information office and has served on the school's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. In addition, Bumgarner has completed internships with Wake Forest University's sports information office and the Atlantic Coast Conference. She has worked numerous summer basketball camps and grew up playing AAU basketball for both the Piedmont X-Press and the Kernersville Lady Phoenix.

"For the past seven years the WBCA has made a commitment to diversify the coaching world in any way we can," said WBCA CEO Beth Bass. "The 'So You Want To Be A Coach' program has really taken off. We have seen some great coaches develop as a result of it, and we are ecstatic to see what this year's class brings to the basketball world."

The WBCA designed the program to increase the number of minorities in the coaching profession by providing a workshop based on educational and professional principles to help those interested in the field. The coaching lessons shared with these participants will assist in identifying, recruiting and retaining women in the coaching profession. Some of this year's program speakers include University of Washington assistant coach Fred Applin, Marist College assistant coach Keila Whittington and St. Louis University head coach Shimmy Gray-Miller.

Founded in 1981, the WBCA promotes women's basketball by unifying coaches at all levels. It seeks develop a reputable identity for the sport and to promote the game as a sport for women and girls.
