Box Score

Salem, VA (2/23/06) -- Freshman Kristine Ellis scored 23 points and senior Jennifer King added 21 in fifth-seeded Guilford's 71-47 win over number-four Eastern Mennonite in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament quarterfinal game Thursday afternoon.

The Quakers (11-15) advance to play top-seeded Randolph-Macon Friday (2/24) at 1:00 p.m. The Yellow Jackets defeated number-eight Washington and Lee earlier Thursday, 79-71. Eastern Mennonite ends its season with a 14-12 record.

After shooting under 40 percent from the floor in its previous six games, Guilford made 28-of-56 (50%) field goals Thursday. The Quakers shot 55.6 percent from the floor in the first half and opened a 36-26 halftime advantage. Ellis, the ODAC's Freshman of the Year, made six of her first eight shots and had 12 points at the break.

Eastern Mennonite's Megan Seward's three-pointer early in the second half trimmed Guilford's lead to seven, but the Quakers answered with a 22-7 burst that opened a 60-38 edge with 9:54 left in the game. King and Ellis both scored nine points in the run. The Quakers built their second-half lead minus junior point guard Dionne Graham, who missed nine minutes in the period with a broken nose.

While Guilford enjoyed its third-best shooting game of the year, the Royals struggled to 29 percent field-goal shooting, their third-lowest shooting percentage of the season. Senior forward Stephanie Mathews paced Eastern Mennonite with 17 points and three steals. Second Team All-ODAC center Amanda Renalds finished with 10 points and five rebounds.  Junior guard Tara Jones led Eastern Mennonite with six boards, five off the offensive glass.

Ellis, who scored 17 points in Guilford's two regular-season losses to Eastern Mennonite, made 11-of-14 field goals and added a game-high eight rebounds in 30 minutes off the bench. King overcame a first-half eye injury for her 18th 20-point game of the season. The ODAC's second-leading scorer, she moved into second place on Guilford's single-season scoring list with 585 points. Graham chipped in with 11 points, five boards, five assists and four steals.

Fifth-seeded Guilford advances to play top-seeded Randolph-Macon Friday (2/24) at 1:00 p.m. at the Salem Civic Center.
