Lynchburg Rallies to Defeat Guilford in W. Hoops

Box Score

Greensboro, NC (2/18/06) -- Senior Lori Fletcher scored 14 of her game-high 19 points in the second half of Lynchburg's 58-55 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's basketball win at Guilford Saturday. The victory in both team's regular-season finale gained a split of the season series and kept Lynchburg's ODAC Tournament hopes alive.

Guilford's Shevon Hackett made the first of two free throws with 22 seconds remaining to break a 54-54 tie and give the Quakers (10-15, 9-11 ODAC) their final lead of the game. Fletcher rebounded Hackett's miss of the second shot, dribbled downcourt and drained a pull-up jumper from the free-throw line with 17 seconds left for a 56-55 Hornets' lead. Guilford turned the ball over on its ensuing possession and Fletcher's two free throws with four seconds left sealed Lynchburg's win.

A solid defensive first half helped the hosts to a 33-25 halftime lead. Guilford forced 10 turnovers and held the Hornets to under 30 percent field-goal shooting in the first half. The Quakers' Dionne Graham scored 13 of her 15 points in the first half.

Guilford held its largest lead of the game, 39-28, after senior Jennifer King's jumper with 12:46 remaining. The Quakers led by eight with 8:08 left, but Lynchburg answered with an 11-2 burst capped by Lindsay McKinney's three-pointer with 4:38 remaining for the Hornets first lead since the game's opening minutes. Five of the contest's six lead changes and three of its four ties occurred in the game's final five minutes.

Seay finished with 11 points for Lynchburg, thanks in part to three three-pointers. Junior Jessica Bridge had a strong game in the post with eight points, three assists and a game-high 11 boards. The Hornets rebounded from its slow shooting start to make nine-of-18 second-half field goals and converted 19-of-22 free throws, including 13 of 14 in the second half.

King, playing her final home regular-season contest, led Guilford with 18 points and added seven rebounds. Graham added a career-high six steals and six assists to her 15 points. Freshman forward Heather Koehler had seven points, eight boards and four steals.

The teams await the announcement of the ODAC Women's Basketball Tournament pairings, which could come as early as Saturday night. The tournament begins Thursday (2/23) at the Salem (VA) Civic Center.
