Humphrey Powers Greensboro Past Guilford, 85-77, in Women's Basketball

Greensboro, N.C. (11/21/06) – Greensboro College's Staci Humphrey scored 19 of her game-high 33 points in the second half to lift the visiting Pride past Guilford Tuesday night, 85-77. The teams met in Guilford's Ragan-Brown Field House for the first time since 1996 after playing nine of the past 10 years in the Greensboro Coliseum.

Humphrey, who also had a game-high nine assists, contributed to 42 of Greensboro's 85 points. She scored nine points in the final 8:30, which helped the Pride pull away in what was a close game. A Nisha Brooks jumper gave the Quakers their final lead of the game, 64-62, with 8:30 left in the game, but Greensboro used a 9-0 run to open an insurmountable lead.

Alexa Williams, who scored 17 of her team-high 21 points in the second half, drew the Quakers to within 71-69 with 4:23 left in the game, but Humphrey responded at the other end with her fifth three-pointer of the game to restore Greensboro's five-point lead. The teams traded baskets before the Quakers were forced to foul. Jamie Motsinger, who scored 11 second-half points, and Humphrey combined to make all six free throws in the final 38 seconds, icing the Pride's third win over Guilford in as many years.

Guilford from a nine-point first-half deficit and tied the game at the halftime buzzer on a Brittany Bumgarner jumper. The Quakers' Joclyn Terry scored 12 of her 20 points off the bench in the first half.

Greensboro enjoyed a 45-38 edge in rebounds. Katie Freeman had a game-high nine boards for the Pride. Chelsea Thomas contributed 14 points, eight rebounds and three steals in 26 productive minutes off the bench.

Guilford returns to action this weekend in the Methodist College Turkey Shoot in Fayetteville, N.C. The Quakers meet Ferrum Saturday (11/25) and the host Monarchs Sunday (11/26) at 4:00 p.m. The Pride hosts Piedmont Dec. 1 in its home opener in Hanes Gym.
