Box Score Greensboro, NC -- Sophomore forward Candace Bryant scored 18 of her career-high 31 points in the second half as visiting Christopher Newport scored a 70-65 comeback basketball win at Guilford Wednesday night. The Captains (3-6) erased an eight-point second-half deficit to claim their second straight triumph and send the Quakers (2-6) to their sixth straight setback.
After sophomore point guard Dionne Graham drained her second trifecta of the game to give the hosts a 44-36 edge with 13:41 left, the Captains got right back into the game with six straight points in 71 seconds. The contest featured 10 lead changes and six ties before rookie forward Colandra Rollins gave the Captains the lead for good. Her free throw with 2:46 left broke a 61-61 deadlock. She scored five of her nine points in the final 2:46, including a critical layup with 28 seconds left that gave Christopher Newport a 68-65 lead.
Following a Quakers' time-out, Guilford junior Jennifer King misfired on a three-point shot with 12 seconds left. The Captains' Jess Hurt made two free throws with four seconds left for the final margin.
Bryant, who entered the game averaging 16.3 points and 12.0 rebounds per outing, notched her sixth double-double of the season and her fourth in as many games. She led all rebounders with 13 and also had three assists. CNU freshman guard Victoria Liaros added 11 points, all in the second half.
The loss spoiled a career night for Guilford's Graham, who finished with a personal-best 25 points and seven assists. She knocked down three of four three-pointers and also had two steals. Freshman guard Kendra Potter scored 10 points and senior forward Courtney Hill grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
The Captains seek their fourth straight win Friday at Spelman. Guilford resumes Old Dominion Athletic Conference play at home Saturday (01/08) against nationally ranked Randolph-Macon at 4:30 p.m.
