Salem, VA (01/21/03) - Roanoke's women's basketball team was missing its head coach and its shots Tuesday in a 70-61 loss to two-time defending league champion Guilford. The Maroons fall to 8-5 on the season and 6-4 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC), while Guilford improves to 10-4 overall (8-2 ODAC) with its seventh straight win and fifth in a row over Roanoke. The Maroons were without head coach Susan Dunagan who missed the game with flu-like symptoms. Assistants Lynn Richmond and Jim Robinson filled in on the Roanoke sidelines.
The Maroons failed to take full advantage of their first-half opportunities. The Quakers committed 20 of their 27 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes, but the Maroons shot just 32.4 percent from the floor and held a 28-19 lead. Roanoke held a 15-point lead as Guilford turned the ball over 16 times in the game's first 13 minutes. The Quakers recovered to finish the half on a 13-6 run.
After scoring the last four points of the first half, Guilford tallied the first 12 points of the second half for a 16-0 run. The Quakers held Roanoke scoreless for the first 5:29 of the second half and grabbed a four-point edge before the Maroons regained the lead at 40-38 on a Lindsay Reynolds layup. The teams traded the lead before a Jackie Hardenbergh jumper with 6:12 left broke a 46-46 tie and gave the Quakers the lead for good.
Guilford junior Jennie Keichline scored 17 of her game- and career-high 21 points in the second half and A.J. Robertson added 12 of her personal-best 19 points in that time as well. The Quakers made 18 of 29 shots from the field (62.1%) and outscored Roanoke, 51-33, in the second half. The Maroons managed nine second-half field goals, three in the final 6:40 of the game.
Jennie Schafer and Kayce Smith each scored 12 points for Roanoke. The Maroons went 20-for-23 from the line in the contest.
