Greensboro, NC (01/17/03) -- Guilford sophomore Courtney Hill (Kannapolis, NC/North Rowan) scored 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the Quakers' hard-fought 85-75 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's basketball win over visiting Eastern Mennonite Friday night. Hill made eight of nine shots from the floor and led Guilford's scorers for the sixth straight game.
The Quakers' 15th straight win over Eastern Mennonite (10-3, 5-3 ODAC) extends their winning streak to five. Guilford (8-4, 6-2 ODAC) has won eight of its last nine games and a school-record 18 contests in the Ragan-Brown Field House. The loss snaps the Royals' winning streak at six games.
While Guilford jumped out to a 15-2 lead and held a 46-31 halftime advantage, the scrappy Royals mounted multiple comebacks in an entertaining game. Freshman guard Carrie Grandstaff (Luray, VA/Mt. Carmel Christian) made four straight three-pointers plus a free throw to open Eastern Mennonite's second-half scoring. Senior center Emily Mishak's (Hutchinson, KS/Chaparral) bucket capped a 17-5 Eastern Mennonite run that pulled the Royals to within 55-52 with 13:46 left in the game. Mishak scored six points in the run and Grandstaff had nine.
The Quakers answered with a 9-2 run of their own that featured six of junior Jennie Keichline's (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill) 11 points. The spurt bumped the hosts' lead to 64-54 with 10:50 left, but the Royals were not done.
Freshman Laura Ludholtz (Fort Defiance, VA/Fort Defiance) trimmed Guilford's lead to 70-67 with 5:25 remaining but the Royals drew no closer. The Quakers made their last three field goals and four of six free throws in the final 2:35 to preserve the win.
Grandstaff finished with a game- and career-high 28 points thanks to a personal-best six three pointers. She tallied 21 points in the second half, including all six trifectas. Freshman forward Stephanie Mathews (Woodstock, VA/Central) scored 12 points off the bench (eight in the second half) for Eastern Mennonite and Ludholtz finished with 11. Eastern Mennonite shot 51 percent from the field and enjoyed a 31-26 rebounding edge.
Freshman guard Jennifer King (Reidsville, NC/Rockingham County) matched her career high with 19 points thanks to a personal-best four-of-six shooting from behind the arc. Junior guard Nicole McCrory's (Charlotte, NC/East Mecklenburg) 12 points equaled her personal scoring standard. Guilford shot a season-high 53.6 percent from the floor and made seven of 16 three-pointers, also a season best.
Both squads return to ODAC action Saturday (01/18) afternoon. The Royals visit Emory & Henry at 4:00 p.m. while the Quakers host Bridgewater at the same time.
