GUILFORD SWEEPS HOME BASKETBALL DOUBLEHEADER

Greensboro, NC (12/14/02) -- Guilford's basketball teams swept a nonconference doubleheader Saturday in the home openers for both men's and women's clubs. The Quakers' men downed Atlanta Christian, 75-64, in the opening game and Guilford's women followed with a convincing 91-45 win over Averett.

Sophomore guard Devon Clyburn (Charlotte, NC/South Mecklenburg) scored 12 of his career-high 16 points in the first half as Guilford (2-4) jumped out to a 43-33 halftime lead. The Chargers (2-14) pulled to within 63-57 with 5:58 remaining on two Stephen Walls' (Warner Robbins, GA) free throws, but Guilford reeled off nine straight points to put the game out of reach and end its three-game losing streak.

Guilford junior forward Jevon Clarke (Apex, NC/Southeast Raleigh) scored 10 points and added eight rebounds, six assists, and four steals, all team-high totals. Junior guard Ron Bradford (Eden, NC/Greensboro Day) tallied nine points on three three-pointers. Guilford's defense forced 29 turnovers, which led to 26 points, and its reserves outscored the Chargers' bench, 32-11, behind eight points apiece by junior guard Robert Spence (Apex, NC/Southeast Raleigh) and rookie swingman Sasha Kovacevic (Goldsboro, NC/Eastern Wayne).

Atlanta Christian junior Brandon Cox (Douglasville, GA) led all scorers with 20 points and forward Zach Bateman (Marietta, GA) posted a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Walls hit four three-pointers and finished with 17 points.

In the nightcap, all nine Guilford players in uniform scored in the Quakers' (3-3) third straight win. Junior center Jennie Keichline (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill) scored a season-high 17 points to lead five Quakers in double-figure scoring as Guilford (3-3) improved to 8-0 all time against Averett (0-7). Keichline made six of seven shots from the floor in the first half and had 13 points and all five rebounds at the break. She netted five points during Guilford's 15-3 run midway through the first half that helped the hosts gain a 49-20 halftime advantage.

Averett pulled no closer than 27 points in the second half. Guilford enjoyed a 48-16 scoring advantage in the paint and made a season-high 52.5 percent of its shots from the field. Freshman guard Jennifer King (Reidsville, NC/Rockingham County) scored 11 of her 16 points in the second half and finished with eight rebounds, four assists, three blocks and four steals. Sophomore forward Lindsey Johnson (Simsbury, CT/Simsbury) netted a career-high 11 points and led Guilford with nine rebounds. Classmate Aftan Medlin (Kenly, NC/North Johnston) matched her career-high with 13 points and added six boards and four assists. Junior forward Jackie Hardenbergh (Oak Hill, VA/Paul VI) chipped in 15 points and eight rebounds off the bench.

Sophomore guard/forward Lakisha Jones (Ridgeway, VA/Magna Vista) and senior guard LaToya Thomas (Madison Heights, VA/Amherst) led the Cougars with seven points apiece.

Both Guilford basketball teams return to action January 4. Guilford's men host Lynchburg at 2:00. The women visit Randolph-Macon at 2:00 pm.
