GUILFORD WOMEN DOWN LYNCHBURG FOR SEVENTH STRAIGHT HOOPS WIN

Greensboro, NC (01/26/02) -- Senior guard Erin Beacham (Atlanta, GA/Lovett School) scored a game-high 14 points and moved into eighth place on Guilford's career scoring list in the Quakers' 66-43 home basketball win over Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rival Lynchburg Saturday.

Guilford (15-2, 12-2 ODAC) forced its opponent into 33 turnovers for the second straight game and cruised to its seventh straight victory. The turnovers led to 26 Guilford points. The Quakers improved their record against Lynchburg to 22-1 with their 17th straight win over the Hornets (6-13, 4-10 ODAC).

Lynchburg senior forward Erika Smith (Chesapeake, VA/Great Bridge) scored all of her team-high 12 points in the first half, including a three-pointer just before halftime that trimmed the Quakers' intermission lead to 27-24.

Guilford opened the second half on a 16-0 run, sparked by six of junior forward Jennie Keichline's (Cary, NC/East Chapel Hill) eight points. Lynchburg senior guard Heather Kirby (Middletown, NJ/Mater Dei) stopped the Quakers' run with two free throws at the 14:04 mark that narrowed Guilford's lead to 43-26. The Hornets drew no closer than 15 points and shot 16.1 percent (5-31) from the floor in the second half.

Beacham left the game a cut just above her right eye in the first half, but returned to the lineup and netted 12 of her 14 points in the second half. She passed Tara Marnie '89 for eighth place on Guilford's career scoring list and now has 1,048 points. Beacham's game-high five assists moved her past Kelly Bailey '90 into second place on the Quakers' all-time assists chart with 351. Beacham also shared team-high rebounding honors with freshman guard Kelly Burger (Toms River, NJ/Toms River). Freshman forward Courtney Hill (Kannapolis, NC/North Rowan), the defending ODAC Player of the Week, and sophomore forward Jackie Hardenbergh (Oak Hill, VA/Paul VA) each added nine points for Guilford.

Lynchburg owned a 43-31 rebounding advantage. Junior center Erika Whitten (Charlottesville, VA/Western Albemarle) scored eight points and grabbed a game-high 10 boards for the Hornets.

Guilford, ranked fifth in this week's NCAA Division III South region poll, hosts league-leading Bridgewater next Saturday (02/02) at 3:00 pm. The Eagles, ranked fourth in the region, started the weekend atop the league standings with an 11-0 ODAC record. Lynchburg returns to action next Saturday (02/02) at Randolph-Macon.
