GREENSBORO, N.C. – Camo Campbell (Flowery Branch, Ga.) and
Darius Safavi-Abbassi (Culver City, Calif.) of the Guilford College men's lacrosse team were honored with spots on the Collegiate Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District team, as announced by the organization on Tuesday.
Lacrosse is a sport that falls under the CSC's at-large program for Academic All-District recognition. In order to qualify for the honor in lacrosse, student-athletes must be at least an academic and athletic sophomore, maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher in the classroom. Meanwhile, a nominee must have competed in 90% of the team's total games played, or start in 66% of the team's total games. No more than six student-athletes may be an at-large nominee per school per gender.
Fulfilling the athletic sophomore portion of the eligibility requirement as a two-year member of the GC football program, Campbell joined the Quakers men's lacrosse squad for the first time this spring, playing all-14 contests in the midfield. He finished fourth on the team in shot attempts, with 65, shots on goal, with 30, and goals scored, with eight this year. He also added seven caused turnovers and corralled 19 groundballs, good for top-five totals on the team. Two of his eight goals this season were on man-up opportunities, tied for the second-most goals on the roster in such situations. In the classroom, Campbell possesses a 3.74 GPA as a double-major in Business Administration and Accounting and earns Academic All-District distinction for the second time after also getting it in the fall with football.
Also a multi-time recipient of the award, albeit his third accolade with all of them in lacrosse, Safavi-Abbassi gets recognized after anchoring Guilford in goal through the season. Starting all-14 games and playing all-but about 100 of the 817:20 minutes of lacrosse the Quakers played this spring, Safavi-Abbassi stood strong with an ODAC-high 15.50 saves per game that ranked 20
th in the nation, totaling 217 in just 14 contests, the ninth-most in a single season in program history. While he did allow 19.47 goals per game and posted a 2-12 record, he did pace GC with 4.36 groundballs per game, ranking 177
th in Division-III men's lacrosse, and added a .482 save rate that also cracked the top-200. A leader off the field both in the locker room and the classroom, Safavi-Abbassi completes a degree double-majoring in Business Administration and Sports Management with a 3.94 GPA.
