Men’s Lacrosse Celebrates Safavi-Abbassi, Fall To Hampden-Sydney

Quakers recognize senior tender’s four-year commitment to program

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Guilford College men's lacrosse team (2-9, 1-6 ODAC) celebrated the career and accomplishments of Darius Safavi-Abbassi (Culver City, Calif.) as the sole remaining senior of his class on their Senior Day on Saturday afternoon, that before getting bested by Hampden-Sydney College (7-7, 5-2 ODAC), 24-4 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play at Appenzeller Field in the Armfield Athletic Center.

The Tigers controlled the game, winning 24 of the 31 faceoffs and scooping 52 groundballs against Guilford's 20 while committing 22 turnovers to the Quakers' 31. All this led to a 67-21 advantage in shot attempts and 44-13 edge in shots on goal.

Safavi-Abbassi went the distance in the cage on his senior night, falling to 2-9 after allowing 24 goals against 20 stops on the 67 total sent his way.

The first of a trio of Tigers to play in goal in this one, Will Palmer improve to 7-7 in goal making one save in the opening quarter. Matthew Dryer worked a majority of the contest, making five saves against four goals permitted in the middle-two stanzas before Hastings Fava wrapped things up with a shutout fourth featuring three saves.

Camo Campbell (Flower Branch, Ga.), Jason Campbell (Fairfax, Va.), Kenneth Crowley (Charlotte, N.C.), and Nick Ianonne (Wellington, Fla.) each scored single unassisted goals for Guilford's scoring output. Hudson Bosland (Otisville, N.Y.) stood out defensively with a couple caused turnovers and five groundballs, trailing just Safavi-Abbassi's seven for a game-high. Ianonne was the most-successful Quaker in the circle, winning 4-of-9.

H-SC saw 15 players find paydirt, led by three-each from Bryce Harnsberger and Scott Thompson. Harnsberger added a couple cause turnovers, four groundballs, and an assist in a well-rounded showing. Of their goals, 17 were assisted across 11 Tigers, including Nick Winchell's quartet and Jacob Messinger's trio of helpers. Michael Green and Alex DeBender saw a bulk of the time in the circle with Green finishing 7-of-9 and DeBender going 7-for-8.

The Quakers did hold Hampden-Sydney scoreless through four minutes before Kavin Wood netted the breakthrough goal followed by Brown Parker and Cole Palmer soon after. The real binge came in the final five minutes as Kevin Myers scored at the 4:39 mark, followed by a faceoff win and Palmer's second goal just nine seconds later, the tally that proved to be the game-winner. Brenden Kittner, Davis Mack, and Nick Esposito all scored rounding out a quarter in which the guest left no doubt who the better team was, winning 8-of-9 draws and outshooting GC, 29-3.

After H-SC extended their lead to a dozen, the Guilford offense caught fire a little over the final five-ish minutes. Camo Campbell lit the spark with his seventh goal then after two Tiger tallies, Iannone, Crowley, and Jason Campbell all showed off some skills with impressive unassisted goals to bring the score to 14-4 at the half.

There would be no such fireworks for the Quakers in the second half, however. Hampden-Sydney pilled up seven in the third frame then netting a trio in the fourth before calling off the dogs in a 24-4 final.

The Quakers home finale is on deck as they welcome Averett University to Greensboro for a clash under the lights on Wednesday, April 15th. First faceoff at The App is set for 7:00 PM.
