NORMAN, Okla. – The (RV) Guilford College men's golf team commenced the spring season seeking a top-25 placement in the country after their second-straight top-10 team placement and two top-20 individual finishes, warranting the Quakers to receive votes in the latest edition of the Bushnell/Golfweek Division III Coaches poll, as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) recently.
Led by Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) ranked junior
Andrew Perry (Fuquay Varina, N.C.), Guilford kept pace with the nation's top contenders throughout most of the tournament. Perry was lights out in his opening 18 holes, logging a career-best 67 (-5) to kick off his spring. Perry would close his round on Tuesday with a 72 (E) to conclude the match, breaking his career 54-hole total with 215 (-1) for 14th place overall.
Gavin Peach (Charlotte, N.C.) would follow suit, matching Perry in breaking his collegiate career-bests with an opening 70 (-2) in round one of the tournament. Peach would conclude the match with a career-low 54-hole total of 217 (+1), marking out in 19th place.
Braeden Gillen (Holly Springs, N.C.) set a collegiate-career record of his own, firing an opening round 72 (E). Gillen was consistent across the board throughout all three rounds, recording a 54-hole total of 222 (+5), positioning in 34th. Guilford was flirting with the top of the leaderboard against the nation's greats, faltering slightly in the second round before improvements were made in the final day for the Quakers' second-straight top-10 team mark.
The spring season is upon us, and the nation's premier squads established themselves in the national poll. Huntingdon College would top NCAA DIII for the second-straight week after their commanding victory of 834 (-30) in the Savannah Invitational over No. 4 Washington & Lee University and No. 7 Oglethorpe University, who each tallied 858 (-6) as squads, tying for second place in the match, respectively. The nationally-recognized Generals are the lone Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) competition in the top-25. Hampden-Sydney College and the University of Lynchburg are both ahead of Guilford in receiving votes from the latest national poll.
Guilford will travel for an in-state clash against the nation's best at the Tiger Invitational hosted by Hampden-Sydney College on Monday, March 9th, through Tuesday, March 10th, at Forest Creek Golf Club in Pinehurst, N.C.
