Gillen, Gallimore Land Career-Bests, Golf Wraps Up Jekyll Island Invite In 24th

Quakers fire notably consistent outings across the board

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – The (RV) Guilford College men's golf team concluded in 24th position against the nation's top-caliber squads at the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational, hosted by Oglethorpe University, on Friday through Sunday at the Pine Lakes Course at Jekyll Island.

The weather was beautiful throughout all three rounds for one of the NCAA Division III's biggest outings of the spring season at the Pine Lakes Course at Jekyll Island. At the conclusion of Sunday's final round on Sunday evening, No. 1 nationally ranked Huntingdon College would emerge victorious, logging an impressive team score of 826 (-38), holding a ten-stroke lead over No. 4 nationally-ranked Washington & Lee University who recorded an 836 (-28) team score, finishing in second place. No. 24 nationally ranked Sewanee University's Turner Chiles received individual medalist scoring 200 (-16) through 54-holes of play. The nationally-recognized Generals held strong at the top of other ODAC foes as the only team in red figures, with (RV) University of Lynchburg, (RV) Hampden-Sydney College, and Shenandoah University ahead of the Quakers firing 868 (+4), 875 (+11), and 883 (+19) team scores to mark out in tied for 12th, 17th, and tied for 20th respectively. Guilford ranked ahead conference opponents Randolph-Macon College and Roanoke College with the Yellow Jackets scoring a 898 (+34) team score, finishing tied for 26th, while the Maroons concluded at 901 (+37) as a squad for 28th overall. The Quakers ended the 54-hole clash in 24th yielding a team total of 888 (+24).

Braeden Gillen (Holly Springs, N.C.) established two consistent outings across 36-holes of action in the opening two rounds, firing 75 (+3) in both showings, collecting six birdies in the process. Gillen would score his career-best 18-hole outing in the final round, recording 70 (-2) with four birdies, totaling a 220 (+4) to move up 30 spots on the leaderboard, tying for 68th overall.

With seven birdies combined in the first two rounds, Andrew Perry (Fuquay Varina, N.C.) equivalated his score in the first 36-holes of action shooting 72 (E), holding a top-50 individual result heading into the final stages of the match. However, Perry would falter in the ultimate round, logging a 77 (+5) with two birdies and two double-bogey's, tallying an individual score of 221 (+5), marking out in tied for 77th.

Larsen Gallimore (Walnut Cove, N.C.) recorded his career-best 18-hole round in the early stages of the tournament, shooting 72 (E), before adding on to Guilford's chances for a top-20 team result with a 75 (+3) on day two. Gallimore matched his number on day three, marking out with a 75 (+3) in the closing round, recording his best three-round total of 222 (+6), tying for 83rd.

Gavin Peach (Charlotte, N.C.) struggled in the tournament-opener with a plethora of bogey's and two double-bogey's, before finding his footing in his best 18-hole score of the match in round two, firing a 72 (E) with four birdies. Peach would conclude the batle with 228 (+12) individually, marking out in tied for 118th position.

On the back of five birdies in round one, Luke Wise (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) would count his score once throughout the three days, logging a 76 (+4) in the opening 18. Wise would ultimately stay consistent throughout the 54-holes, unable to gain ground for a 230 (+14) individual score, tying for 124th place.

Guilford will hit the links once more for an individual event on Monday, March 30th, through Tuesday, March 31st, at the Glenn Heath Memorial Invitational, hosted by the Apprentice School at Williamsburg Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va.
