PINEHURST, N.C. – The (RV) Guilford College men's golf team ranked out in 16th place at the Tiger Invitational, hosted by Hampden-Sydney College on Monday through Tuesday at Forest Creek Golf Club.
It was toasty throughout both days of action as the nation's top caliber teams traveled to one of the country's premier golf towns at Forest Creek Golf Club for a premier battle of ranked squads in NCAA DIII. After wrapping up the third round of play Tuesday afternoon, No. 9 nationally-ranked Methodist University topped the rest of the field after logging a three-day total of 851 (-14) team score, being the only school to shoot in red figures in all three rounds. No. 1 nationally-ranked Huntingdon College would follow suit, recording an 857 (-7) team score through 54 holes of play. No. 2 nationally-ranked Emory University's Kevin Mu claimed individual medalist, being the lone player to score in double red figures with a 206 (-10) through three rounds. No. 4 nationally-ranked Washington & Lee University and (RV) University of Lynchburg would rank ahead of Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opponents on the leaderboard, both shooting 871 (+7) to tie for sixth overall. The Quakers would mark ahead of (RV) Hampden-Sydney College, marking a 909 (+45) team total to conclude T-18th on the leaderboard. Guilford would end the 54-hole battle in 16th after shooting a team score of 898 (+34).
Andrew Perry (Fuquay Varina, N.C.) displayed consistencies through back-to-back outings to kick off the spring. Perry struggled to find his footing in round one after four bogeys and a double-bogey on the par-4 17th to log an opening 77 (+5). The tides would turn for the better as Perry finished day one with a 70 (-2), with four birdies. That momentum would push Perry to score his second-straight round in red figures for a 71 (-1), tallying up his three-day total of 218 (+2) to move up 14 spots, marking out in 24th overall.
Gavin Peach (Charlotte, N.C.) and
Braeden Gillen (Holly Springs, N.C.) held their ground to keep the Quakers in contention throughout the tournament. After a rough finish to conclude round one with a 77 (+5), Peach would drive up his standing with a 74 (+2) in round two and a 75 (+3) in round three to conclude the tournament with a 226 (+10) to mark out in T-57th.
Gillen would continue these same consistencies throughout the match, opening the clash with an opening 75 (+3), before improving off that performance with a 74 (+2) to close day one. Gillen would slip up on day two after five bogeys and a double bogey on the par-4 17th to shoot a 77 (+5) in round three, matching Peach with a 226 (+10) for a T-57th placement.
Luke Wise (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) would get back on track in the opening round of play, recording a 73 (+1) to kick off the tournament. Although his score would count in round two, double-bogeys on both nines would cause Wise to slip down the leaderboard as he fired 234 (+18) to finish in 83rd place.
After faltering in round two,
Larsen Gallimore (Walnut Cove, N.C.) would only count his score once for the Quakers, improving in round three with a 76 (+4) for a 239 (+23) individual score to rank out in 98th position.
Guilford will return to action on Friday, March 20th, through Sunday, March 22nd, for the 26th Annual Jekyll Island Intercollegiate, hosted by Oglethorpe University at Pine Lakes Course at Jekyll Island in Jekyll Island, Ga.
