GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Guilford College men's golf team saw
Parker Cumbea (Fuquay Varina, N.C.) and
Evan Mendyk (Summerfield, N.C.) named to the Collegiate Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District team with Mendyk being selected to advance to the National Ballot for a chance to be Academic All-American, as announced by the organization on Tuesday.
Golf is a sport that falls under the CSC's at-large program for Academic All-District recognition. In order to qualify for the honor in golf, student-athletes must be at least an academic and athletic sophomore, maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher in the classroom. Meanwhile, they must compete in 70 percent of the team's total varsity events that were team scoring events. No more than ten student-athletes may be an at-large nominee per school per gender.
Enjoying a brilliant fourth campaign, Mendyk collects yet another accolade to boast at the finish of his standout career. Receiving PING/GCAA All-American Honorable Mention recognition Wednesday to add another honor to his season that had already included a PING/GCAA All-Region selection, First Team All-ODAC honors, Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and an NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship invitation as an individual at-large participant, Mendyk's 2024-25 campaign is gradually becoming one for the ages both on and off the course. The graduate student played ten events and 27 rounds of golf this year and accrued an average round score of 73.1 (+1) that sits within the top-15 in program history. His resume features 12 rounds with a score at-or-below par, three top-ten placings and two more within the top-five. Mendyk finished as the best or second-best scorer for Guilford in eight of the nine events at which their "A" Team played in and was at least tied as the team's top-scorer on four occasions. Also earning Academic All-District last season, he finished his degree in analytics early, posting a 3.79 GPA and is now in the MBA program where he has a 3.71 GPA. For his excellence on and off the course, he was selected as one of 206 players nationally to advance to the national ballot and be in the running for CSC Academic All-American honors, as one of just nine players in the ODAC to move on with a chance at the distinction. The national ballot will factor in an athlete's academic and athletic achievement, in addition to their leadership on-and-off the course. Mendyk becomes the fourth Quaker to advance to the National Ballot for a bid at Academic All-America recognition this athletic year, joining women's soccer's
Ady Franken (Peoria, Ill.), men's tennis'
Andres Mercedes (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic), and men's basketball's
Gabe Proctor (Apex, N.C.).
Fellow fourth-year Quaker golfer, and 2024 CSC Academic All-District pick, Cumbea, also receives recognition after a solid final season in the cardinal and grey. One-of-three GC players to play all 25 rounds over their nine "A" Team events, he posted an average round score of 75.4 (+4). Recording a trio of rounds at-or-below par with a low of 71, he did save his best for last as Guilford's number-two scorer at the ODAC Championship, posting a season-best 20
th place finish. His top event from a scoring standpoint came at the NCAA Fall Preview to open the year when he finished just two stokes above par to finish 30
th in the event. A double-major, he finished his degrees in Accounting and Business Administration this year, owning a 3.72 GPA.
