GREENSBORO, N.C. – Headlined by a top-50 finish by
Andrew Perry (Fuquay Varina, N.C.) and
Braeden Gillen (Holly Springs, N.C.), the No. 15 nationally ranked Guilford College men's golf team secured a 13th place finish at the Gate City Invitational, hosted by Greensboro College on Monday through Tuesday at Forest Oaks Country Club.
Beautiful golf weather occurred both days with highs in the middle 70's for Monday and Tuesday's season opener. Guilford opened up Monday morning early with 36-holes of play to open up the season, followed by another dawn start to conclude the match with 18-holes on Tuesday. No. 5 nationally ranked Sewanee University secured the victory with a team score of 861 (-3) after just edging out No. 9 nationally ranked Carnegie Mellon University who finished at 862 (-2) and No. 7 nationally ranked Huntingdon College who concluded with 863 (-1) as a squad. There was a four-way tie at 210 (-6)Â for the top individual leading to a playoff after the conclusion of day two individually after 54 holes of play. The Quakers were second-best to other ODAC schools in the field with No. 2 nationally ranked Washington & Lee dominating conference foes with a team score of 872 (+8) finishing sixth in the tournament.
Perry led the charge on the first two 18's for the Quakers, posting three birdies on the round, with one bogey on the par 4 ninth on his first 18. He would add to his birdie-total with five additional birdies on the second 18 on day one. Although a few hiccups would occur in the middle stages of round two, Perry would finish round two strong, keeping him in the conversation for individual medalist. Tuesday was shaky from start to finish as Perry would wrap up round three with three bogeys, two double-bogeys, and one birdie on the card to finish at 223 (+7).
Gillen would follow-suit after a steady improvement after three rounds of play in two days for Guilford. He would start off slow in the first 18 with two double-bogeys and four bogeys, but bounced back with two birdies and an eagle on the par 5 eleventh. Gillen steadily improved with his second and third 18's on both days with eight bogeys that were canceled out by five birdies to conclude his first collegiate career three-round score with 224 (+8).
Gavin Peach (Charlotte, N.C.) would place not too far behind, after a solid debut after being out last year, keeping GC in the top 10 conversation with a 73 round-one score. He wore-down after round two in trying to duplicate his effort, however, posting plus-six 78. Peach would conclude with a rise in the leaderboard after posting a +3 75 on round three to conclude with a 226 (+10), resulting in a tie for 56th.
Luke Wise (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) had a mediocre showing kicking off his sophomore season. Opening with a plus-seven 79 in the opening 18, he would settle-down with a smooth two-under 70 in round two to conclude day-one. Wise would not duplicate the same in round 3 finishing with a plus-six 78, bringing his final tally to 227 (+11) and tied for 28
th in the standings.
Larsen Gallimore (Walnut Cove, N.C.) rounded out the Quaker scores with an up-and-down debut to his junior season. He would be off to a fantastic start after finishing round one with a two-over 74, but that tumbled-down in the afternoon after an 83 (+11) in round two. Gallimore would conclude with a solid finish of plus-five 77 on day 2, placing tied for 83rd with a 234 (+18).
Lucas Falcone (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) competed for the Quakers, but did not factor into team scoring. He finished tied for 87th at 22-over with rounds of 81, 79, and 78.
The Quakers will next compete at the NCAA Fall Preview being played Sunday, September 21st through Tuesday, September 23rd at the Mission Inn & Resort in Howie-in-the-Hills, Fla.
