FOREST, Va. – Receiving All-ODAC Second Team recognition for the third-straight year in singles and doubles,
Andres Mercedes (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic), and being accompanied by
Brandon Hermes (West Hartford, Conn.) in doubles for the second-straight season, the Guilford College men's tennis team claimed a pair of Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) postseason honors as announced by the conference on Tuesday afternoon.
Making it three-for-three as the All-ODAC Second Team honoree in both singles and doubles, Mercedes just continues to see great success atop the Quakers' lineup. Cracking the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) regional rankings for the first time in his career late in the spring, at No. 20, the junior has enjoyed a brilliant season once again. Compiling a record of 31-5 across singles and doubles action this season, he was nearly flawless in singles play. Racking up a 17-1 mark that included an 8-1 record inside of ODAC play, his lone blemish was due to retirement in the team's match at Shenandoah, while he picked up upset singles victories against Washington & Lee University and Division-I North Carolina Central University. Outside of league action, he also claimed a tournament victory at the Methodist Invitational in the top flight of singles. This marks the 14
th instance in which a Quaker has been named to an All-ODAC team in both singles and doubles in the same season. Mercedes becomes the first player to do so three times in a career, however.
In his sophomore season, Hermes enjoyed another strong season as Mercedes' running-mate in doubles action, going 14-4 with a partner on the year. GC's top two players were paired with each other for 17 of the team's 18 matches this season with all of them coming out of the top flight. In those, they went 13-4 with a 7-2 record against conference foes with their only league defeats coming to the eventual ODAC Champions from Averett and at Hampden-Sydney in the regular season finale. Hermes becomes the eighth Quaker to be a multi-time All-ODAC selection in doubles.
As a team, GC finished 6-11 on the season, and 4-5 in ODAC play to make the conference tournament although they drew a brutal matchup with the red-hot, eventual conference champion Cougars of Averett.
