GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Guilford College men's tennis team (2-16, 2-8 ODAC) closed out its 2026 campaign at the McMichael Courts on Sunday morning, hosting a tough Shenandoah University squad (12-5, 6-2 ODAC). While the Hornets walked away with a 6-1 victory, the Quakers showcased the growth and resilience that defined their late-season stretch.
The morning began with a standout performance at the No. 1 doubles flight. The tandem of
Andres Mercedes (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) and
Emmanuel Oye (Clayton, N.C.) continued their high-level tennis, securing a dominant 6-3 victory over Artem Babaiev and Neal Love. Despite the early momentum, Shenandoah managed to claim the doubles point by taking the No. 2 and No. 3 positions.
In singles play, Mercedes provided the highlight of the match at the top flight, taking down Shine Tokas in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, to secure a point for Guilford.
At the No. 2 spot, Oye battled in the longest match of the day. After taking the first set 6-4, Oye fought through a grueling second set and a high-stakes third-set tiebreaker, eventually falling just short with a final score of 4-6, 6-4, 10-7.
George Hardie (Liberty, N.C.),
Alex Brown (Burlington, N.C.),
Turner Johnson (Oak Ridge, N.C.), and
Chris Kelley (Lexington, N.C.) all showed immense grit against a disciplined opponent.
This match concludes the season for the Quakers. Guilford's journey was headlined by their unwavering determination, and it provides a strong foundation for the program heading into the 2027 season.
