GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Guilford College men's tennis team (2-12, 2-4 ODAC) returned to the McMichael Courts on Wednesday afternoon, falling 5-1 to Montreat College (5-11, 2-4 AAC). Despite the team result, the Quakers highlighted the match with a dominant showing in doubles and several gritty singles performances.
At the No. 2 doubles flight, the team of
Turner Johnson (Oak Ridge, N.C.) and
George Hardie (Liberty, N.C.) put on a clinical display, defeating Joaquin Hernandez and Jayden McConnell by a decisive 6-1 margin. At the No. 1 spot,
Emmanuel Oye (Clayton, N.C.) and
Alex Brown (Burlington, N.C.) fell 6-3 to Julian Stolevski and Paul Saemann, while the Cavaliers picked up the final doubles tally at the No. 3 spot via forfeit.
In singles play, Hardie provided the standout performance of the day at the No. 2 position. Hardie remained perfect on the afternoon, coasting to a 6-2, 6-2 straight-set victory over Ben Smith.
The Quakers also showed immense resilience in two three-set battles. At No. 3 singles, Brown captured the opening set 7-5 before eventually falling in a tight 10-6 third-set tiebreaker.
Chris Kelley (Lexington, N.C.) mirrored that effort at the No. 5 spot, winning a grueling first-set tiebreaker 7-6(5) before dropping a 10-6 decision in the final frame. Oye and Johnson also put up determined efforts in their respective matches, while the No. 6 position resulted in no match.
