Southern Virginia Hands Men's Lacrosse its First Defeat

BUENA VISTA, Va. — Zach Danneman scored six goals and had two assists as Southern Virginia defeated visiting Guilford College, 26-16, on Saturday afternoon.

Both teams now have a 3-1 record after the non-conference game.

The Quakers led after the first period (7-5) and held an 11-9 lead at halftime. SVU, however, rallied to dominate the second half. The Knights outscored Guilford 7-3 in the third quarter and 10-2 in the final 15 minutes of play.

Brennan Sweeney netted four goals and had two assists to pace the Quaker offense. Fellow seniors Derek Zacatenco scored four times and Connor Sweeney tallied once and dealt a team-best four assists. 

Southern Virginia led in faceoffs (22-21), ground balls (35-30) and shots (61-38). The Knights were 7-of-10 on extra-man opportunities while GC was 2-of-11.

Senior goaltender Jack Rogers allowed 15 goals against 10 saves for the Quakers. Freshman Marley Tolton played the final 16:40 between the pipes for Guilford. He made two saves and allowed the final 10 SVU goals. Sophomore Dimaggio Wilson recorded a team-best two caused turnovers in the contest.

For Southern Virginia, Dalon Hampshire got the win in goal. He had six saves and gave up 12 Guilford goals.

The Quakers play a non-conference game at Methodist University on Tuesday (2/25).
