Quakers Use Dominant Fourth Quarter to Rally Past Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College's men's lacrosse team scored nine unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to rally past host Greensboro College, 16-9, in nonconference action Wednesday at Pride Field.

The Quakers (3-0) battled back in the third quarter from a 7-4 halftime deficit and tied the game at 7-7 before the Pride tallied twice in the frame's final 67 seconds. Guilford's Derek Zacatenco's goal off a Connor Sweeney assist started the decisive run three minutes into the fourth quarter. The Quakers' Jax Atkins won the ensuing face-off, which led to Sweeney's game-tying tally 18 seconds later.

Bailey Benjamin's goal with 9:44 left in regulation proved the game-winner and was followed 13 seconds later by Sweeney's second goal of the quarter. A Greensboro penalty at the 8:49 mark resulted in a Zacatenco man-up tally with 8:11 to play. The Pride's Tommy Barrett took three minutes of non-releasable penalties after the goal, which resulted in three more extra-man goals, two by Brennan Sweeney. Guilford converted on five of seven man-up chances, including all four fourth-quarter opportunities. Greensboro was 0-for-2 with the man advantage.

Connor Sweeney finished with five goals, three assists, and eight points, all game-highs. He had two goals and an assist in the final quarter. Brennan Sweeney had three goals and an assist in the last frame and added two more assists earlier for six points. He moved into sixth place among Guilford's career assist leaders with (70). Zacatenco scored both of his goals in the fourth and finished with five points. Benjamin and Bryce Craig both scored twice for Guilford. Senior goalie Jack Rogers made 12 saves and picked up four ground balls. He had two stops in the fourth quarter. Atkins won 11 of 17 draws and collected a game-best six ground balls. Austin Rohweder caused four turnovers.

Greensboro's Michael Meley scored three goals and Spencer Kontoulas tallied twice for the Pride, which was outshot 49-32. Christopher Stalling made 14 saves in 58 minutes of action.
