Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Josh Currier and Cory Hilliard scored three goals apiece in Virginia Wesleyan College's 11-6 home win over Guilford College Saturday. The contest marked both teams' Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener.
Hilliard scored twice in a decisive third quarter, which saw the Marlins (6-0, 1-0 ODAC) tally three unanswered goals and break a 4-4 halftime tie. After Daniel Hughey and Cam Davis scored less than a minute apart to get Guilford within 8-6, Virginia Wesleyan scored the game's final three goals, including Hilliard and Currier's last tallies.
Currier had a fourth-quarter assist to finish with a game-high four points for the hosts. He and Hilliard were the Marlins' lone multiple-point scorers. Duncan Haight won 8-of-15 face-offs and collected a team-best seven ground balls. Goalie Sean Galloway made 11 saves and picked up six ground balls.
Guilford's Adam Fiore dished out a game-high three assists, including two in the first quarter, which helped the Quakers (1-4, 0-1 ODAC) take a 3-1 lead. His third helper led to Zachary Berkowitz's goal 5:41 before halftime that tied the game at 4-4. Davis and Berkowitz added a goal and an assist apiece. Berkowitz also picked up six ground balls to share team-high honors with Connor Manning, who won 10-of-15 face-offs. Davis caused a game-best four turnovers. Sophomore goalie Parker Styles made 14 saves, eight in the second half, and had two ground balls.
Coach Tom Carmean's Quakers meet the University of Mary Washington March 16 in a neutral-site contest in Midlothian, Virginia.
