Men's Lacrosse Pick Up First Win of Season Over Otterbein, 11-8

GREENSBORO, N.C. (3/25/10) -- Daniel Dowd had four goals and two assists to spark Guilford College to an 11-8 home win over Otterbein College Thursday afternoon. Chris Sisk also netted four goals to help the Quakers (1-8) to their first victory of 2010.

Otterbein's Jason Paselk opened the scoring with an easy goal off a Quakers' turnover 1:34 into the game. Guilford reeled off the next five goals and led, 5-1, at halftime. Sisk scored in both of the first two quarters.

The teams traded goals for most of the third quarter before Dowd perked up with three scores in the period's final 3:34. His third goal of the game came with one second left in the quarter off a length-of-the field pass by defender Tyler Zivic. The goal sent the Quakers into the fourth quarter with a 9-4 lead.

Sisk opened the scoring in the final period with his fourth score. The Cardinals' Alex Dowell scored with 3:49 left in regulation, which set off a flurry of four goals in 36 seconds. Mack Morris scored twice for Otterbein, which pulled the first-year Cardinals to within 11-7 with 3:13 to play.

Guilford's Jake Beneke added three points on a goal and two assists. Dowd and Greg Nash shared game-high honors with six ground balls apiece. Defender Charlie Robinson had four ground balls and caused five of Otterbein's 26 turnovers. Goalie Mark Guillen had 10 saves, four ground balls and caused two turnovers in the win.

Morris' four goals paced Otterbein's offense. Dowell finished with two scores and Adam McGrath added two assists. Juan Contreras picked up a club-best five ground balls and caused three of Guilford's 35 turnovers. Adam Hatchard had 10 saves in goal.

The Quakers visit Virginia Wesleyan College Saturday (3/27) in a 1:00 Old Dominion Athletic Conference match.
