Box Score HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. (3/28/09) – Andrew Mahoney scored three goals and three assists to lead Hampden-Sydney College past visiting Guilford College in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's lacrosse opener for both teams Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers (3-5, 1-0 ODAC) got off to a bit of a slow start, but Kenny Mathison broke open the scoring five minutes into the game. Hampden-Sydney struck a minute later with a Kevin Coats goal for a 2-0 lead.
Guilford (2-5, 0-1 ODAC) scored the game's next two goals, which tied the game at 2-2 late in the first quarter, but Hampden-Sydney scored the game's next 12 goals to open a 14-2 lead with 6:15 left in the third quarter. Mahoney scored all three of his goals and Mathison netted two extra-man goals and assisted on another in the 12-0 run. Seven different Tigers scored during the decisive outburst, including Kyle Jett and Ben Clarke, who both tallied twice.
The Quakers' Greg Nash stopped the run and made the score 14-3, but Dudley Locke scored just before the end of the quarter for a 15-3 Hampden-Sydney edge.
Matt Meriwether led five different Guilford goal scorers with a goal and an assist.
Hampden-Sydney junior Frankie McGuire and Guilford senior Manny Sargeant shared game-high honors with five ground balls apiece. Junior Mark Bagby paced three Hampden-Sydney goaltenders with eight saves on day. Rookie Ryan Walsh made 10 of Guilford's 18 stops in just under 25 minutes in goal.
Hampden-Sydney won the ground balls battle, 53-25, and outshot Guilford, 60-29. The Tigers edged Guilford in face-offs, winning 14 to the Quakers' 10.
The Tigers return to action at home April 1 to host Randolph-Macon College at 1:00 p.m. The Quakers are back in action April 4 versus visiting Virginia Wesleyan College at 12 noon.
