Guilford Rallies Past Shenandoah in Men's Lacrosse, 11-10

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. (3/10/09) -- Host Guilford College used a pair of goals scored in man-down situations to key an 11-10 non-league men's lacrosse victory over Shenandoah Tuesday afternoon.

The Quakers (1-3) saw Shenandoah (2-1) score four times in its first six man-up opportunities, but completely turned it around in the second half.

GC held the Hornets to just one man-up goal in five second-half opportunities and killed off a final penalty as time expired.

The Quakers also scored their final go-ahead goal down a man. With Manny Sargeant in the box for tripping at 9:14 of the fourth, GC got a turnover 36 seconds into the penalty and converted into a Joey Chrisman man-down goal at 8:35.

The goal was the first of three straight for the hosts as Guilford took an 11-8 lead by the 3:36 mark.

SU refused to fold however, getting James Gonzalez and Stephen Mayor goals in the next two minutes to cut the deficit to one with 1:35 remaining.

Guilford committed one more penalty, a push with 16 seconds left, but Shenandoah could not get off a shot. Tyler Zivic stripped Gonzalez at seven seconds and the Quakers sealed the victory by clearing the ball.

Mayor led the Hornets with three goals and two assists for five points while Mac Hedrick added a goal and three assists and Kevin Totaro three goals.

Rodney Mattison had 12 saves in the losing effort.
