Virginia Wesleyan Edges Guilford, 62-58

Greensboro, N.C. (2/2/08) -- Virginia Wesleyan College rebounded from a poor shooting first half to overtake Guilford College and win Saturday's Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's basketball contest, 62-58 in the Ragan-Brown Field House. The Marlins (15-5, 11-3 ODAC) even the season-series with the Quakers (10-9, 5-9 ODAC) who drop their seventh-straight ODAC game.

In a game that saw eight ties and 16 lead changes, Virginia Wesleyan began the game shooting poorly (29.0%) and went into halftime trailing 27-26. However the Marlins found the range in the second half shooting a blistering 60 percent in the stanza to stay just out of reach of the determined Quakers. Junior Andrea Ushinski scored a team-high 15 points, while senior Heather Phillips added a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. Virginia Wesleyan hauled in 41 rebounds to only 31 by Guilford.

Guilford took its final lead of the game 54-43 with just 4:29 left in the second half as sophomore guard Jasmine Wood scored the final of her game-high 19 points. Junior Tracey Croner scored 11 points, while players pulled down seven rebounds for the Quakers in the loss. Guilford shot a solid 38.3 field goal percentage for the game.

The Quakers take to the road next Friday (2/8) and Saturday (2/9) to play league-rivals Bridgewater and Eastern Mennonite. The games begin at 7:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., respectively. Virginia Wesleyan hosts league-foe Randolph College Tuesday (2/5) at 7:00 p.m.
