King Helps Guilford Past Roanoke, 64-58

Box Score

GREENSBORO, NC (2/11/06) --  Senior Jennifer King (Reidsville, NC/Rockingham County) never left the floor in Guilford's  64-58 women's basketball victory over Roanoke Saturday. King paced the Quakers with her double-double of 24 points and 13 rebounds. The first rebound was her 500th in her career at Guilford. Freshman Kristine Ellis (Greensboro, NC/East Forsyth) came off the bench for the Quakers and totalled 14 points and 10 boards in 25 minutes.

The game was knotted at 30-30 at the end of the first half. Roanoke freshman Maria Migliarese (Roanoke, VA/Hidden Valley) had 12 points and seven rebounds in the first half, but picked up her second and third fouls late in the period, which limited her second-half playing time. She finished with a team-high 14 points and 11 rebounds. Guilford's defense held Roanoke to 30 percent field-goal shooting in the second half, down from 36 percent in the first half.

The turning point of the game came at 13:59 in the second half with the Quakers holding a slim three-point lead.  King knocked down a jumper and followed it 30 seconds later with a long-distance three-pointer after a Roanoke turnover. The two shots ignited a 17-6 Quakers' run. Junior Dionne Graham (Savannah, GA/Jenkins) scored five of her 13 points during the spurt.

The Maroons rallied to within 58-55 with 1:28 left in the game on Veronica Kelly's (Westport, CT/Staples) layup in traffic. Guilford's King made all four free throws and Graham added two points from the charity stripe in the final 36 seconds to preserve the win.

Guilford hosts Washington and Lee Wednesday (2/15) in an ODAC game. The Maroons close their regular season Wednesday against visiting Emory & Henry.
