Virginia Wesleyan - Win

Box Score

Greensboro, NC (4/9/05) -- Bryan Borchard's fourth goal of the game with 2:19 left in overtime gave Guilford College a 9-8 win over visiting Virginia Wesleyan in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's lacrosse match Saturday. The win ends a 72-game ODAC losing skid and marked Guilford's first men's lacrosse win in league play since a 15-10 win over the Marlins March 27, 1993.

"It's kind of surreal," Guilford interim head coach Andy Rowe said. "I'm glad for the kids. They've worked so hard for this point. They didn't quit, which is something I don't know would've happened in the past."

Borchard got single coverage on a short-stick defender, made a move around him and unleashed his game winner from about 15 yards out, which triggered an on-field celebration that included all of the Quakers, plus a few excited fans from the stands.

"It wasn't the play we were looking for," Rowe said. "That's just Bryan doing what he can do. He was confident in running by him and got off a great shot."

Guilford rebounded from a 4-1 third-quarter deficit and took its first lead with 2:38 left in regulation on rookie Matt Del Olmo's third goal of the contest. Virginia Wesleyan tied the game with 26 seconds left on a blast by sophomore Brian Fugazy off a Dan Hofmeister feed.

The Marlins' Drew Smythers opened overtime by winning his 18th face-off of the game. The Marlins turned the ball over without taking a shot and Guilford cleared it into the offensive zone. The Quakers called a timeout with 2:38 left before Borchard's game winner.

Smythers' face-off domination nearly won the game for Virginia Wesleyan. The Marlins scored four goals within 15 seconds of a won face-off by the freshman midfielder. Guilford won only three fourth-quarter face-offs in the contest.

Virginia Wesleyan scored twice in the last 13 seconds of the second quarter and 15 seconds into the start of the third quarter to open a 4-1 edge. Borchard tallied twice during a 3-0 Quakers' run that tied the game at 4-4. Back-to-back Hofmeister goals gave the guests a 7-5 edge early in the fourth period, but Borchard scored for the Quakers at the 12:03 mark and set up freshman Todd Bochenek's goal with 7:58 left in regulation to tie the game at 7-7.

Borchard matched his career high with a season-best six points on four goals and two assists. Del Olmo's three scores also marked a personal best. Rookie Andrew Vigne was solid in goal with 12 saves, a team-high six ground balls and a caused turnover.

Hofmeister paced the Marlins with two goals and two assists. Senior midfielder Brendan Rooney added two goals and one assist. Fugazy also scored twice. Smythers had an assist along with his 18 won face-offs and 10 ground balls, both game highs. Sophomore Tyler Sothoron made 12 saves in goal.

The Quakers host 12th-ranked Lynchburg Wednesday (4/13) in a 3:30 ODAC tilt. Virginia Wesleyan hosts league-rival Randolph-Macon Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
