Roanoke - Loss

Box Score

Greensboro, NC (4/16/05) -- Sophomore attackman Jon Mason scored five goals and senior linemate Tug Schroeder added three scores and four assists in visiting Roanoke's 14-6 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's lacrosse win at Guilford Saturday afternoon. The Maroons (9-1, 4-0 ODAC) are ranked fourth in this week's Geico/STX Division III Coaches' Poll.

Despite losing by eight goals, the Quakers (4-7, 1-4 ODAC) played relatively well thanks to the goaltending of freshman Andrew Vigne, who made a game- and career-high 26 saves. Roanoke had outscored Guilford in its previous five meetings, 116-19, including last year's 30-5 rout. Saturday's outcome marked the closest game in the series since a 14-7 Roanoke triumph in 1999.

Freshman midfielder Matt Del Olmo put the Quakers on the board first before Mason tied the game 75 seconds later. The Maroons opened a 3-1 lead at the end of the first quarter thanks to Mason's first two scores. Guilford junior midfielder Bryan Borchard scored an extra-man goal to start the second quarter, which made it a 3-2 game. Roanoke responded by winning the ensuing face-off and setting up a man-down tally by Schroeder 27 seconds after Borchard's tally. Schroeder's goal triggered a 5-0 Roanoke run that gave the guests an 8-2 lead early in the third quarter. Roanoke outshot the Quakers, 32-13, in the first half, but Vigne kept Guilford in the game with 13 saves.

Borchard closed out the third-quarter scoring with consecutive goals to make it a 10-5 contest entering the final period. Mason quashed any hopes of a Guilford comeback by scoring twice off of Schroeder feeds seven seconds apart early in the fourth quarter.

Schroeder entered the game with five assists on the year and nearly matched it with his season-high four helpers. Three of his assists came on goals by Mason, who raised his league-leading goals total to 43. Junior midfielder Chris Keating finished with four points on one goals and three assists. Senior midfielder Dan Reed and freshman attackman Zack Thomas each contributed two goals and one assist. Rookie midfielder Billy Cameron won 16 of 20 face-offs and had nine ground balls. Junior defender Ben Love made a game-high 11 pickups. Clasmate Matt Madalon went the distance in goal and recorded 13 saves and six ground balls.

Borchard had a hand in five of the Quakers' six goals with four scores and an assist. Del Olmo and senior midfielder Eddie Massello each scored once. Massello was one of six Guilford seniors playing the final home contest of his college career. Vigne led Guilford with five ground balls.

The Quakers conclude their gauntlet of three straight top-11 league foes Wednesday (4/20) at 10th-ranked Washington and Lee. Roanoke plays at Randolph-Macon Sunday (4/17) in a 12 noon ODAC tussle.
