Box Score Greensboro, NC (03/06/04) -- Guilford used a 6-0 game-ending run to offset a three-goal deficit and post a 12-9 nonconference men's lacrosse win over visiting Marymount Saturday. The Quakers' (2-1) victory ended the Saints' (0-3) four-game winning streak in the season series between the two schools that dated to 1996.
Marymount's D.J. Tayman's (Pasadena, MD/Mt. St. Joseph) tally with 2:01 left in the third quarter gave the Saints a 9-6 lead, matching their largest advantage of the game. Guilford battled back with three quick goals in the final 1:44 of the period that tied the score at 9-9 headed into the final quarter. Senior attackman Chip Hill (Sellersville, PA/Central Bucks West) started the Quakers' spurt with his goal at the 1:44 mark of the third quarter. Junior Tucker Jacobs (West Lebanon, NH/Lebanon) and rookie Alex Penny (Baltimore, MD/Hanover) tallied their first goals of the year in similar fashion 14 seconds apart to knot the game at 9-9.
Sophomore midfielder Bryan Borchard (Franklin, MA/Franklin) gave Guilford a 10-9 edge 47 seconds into the fourth quarter with an unassisted goal, his second of the year. Neither team found the back of the net for nearly 10 minutes in the tightly played contest. Marymount's first of two penalties led to an 11-9 Guilford edge as junior attackman Matt Wagner (Mill Valley, CA/Marin Catholic) converted a pretty pass from senior Josh Miller (Princeton, NJ/Princeton) on the man advantage with 5:53 left. Hill's fifth goal of the year off a Borchard feed with 19 seconds left closed the scoring.
Guilford's defense kept the Saints scoreless in the fourth quarter thanks in part to junior goalie Aaron Skiles (Weirton, WV/Shattuck-St. Mary's (MN)), who made six of his 11 saves in the last period.
Miller had a hand in five of the Quakers' 12 goals with two goals and three assists. Wagner netted a game-high three goals for Guilford and Chip Hill added two scores. Borchard and Jacobs both contributed a goal and an assist. Senior midfielder Won Hill (Catonsville, MD/Catonsville) won five-of-10 face-offs and had a team-high eight ground balls.
Senior midfielder Kosta Troupos (Gaithersburg, MD/Wootton) led Marymount with a goal and a game-high three assists. Dynan and junior midfielder Nick Hoefer (Oak Hill, VA/Oakton) tallied two goals apiece. Hoefer also had an assist. Freshman attackman Brandon Nemes (Somerset, NJ/Immaculata) won nine-of-14 face-offs and had a game-best 10 ground balls. Junior goalie Matt McConnell (Fairfax, VA/Robinson) went the distance in goal and had nine saves.
Guilford visits Shenandoah Saturday (3/13) in a nonconference game. The Saints play nationally ranked Salisbury Wednesday (3/10) in their Capital Athletic Conference opener.
