GUILFORD WOMEN TURN BACK LYNCHBURG, 70-57

Greensboro, NC (02/08/03) -- Junior Jennie Keichline (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill) scored 11 of her team-high 15 points in the second half and Courtney Hill (Kannapolis, NC/North Rowan) tallied all 11 of her points in the final period of Guilford's 70-57 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's basketball win over visiting Lynchburg Saturday.

Today's triumph, combined with Roanoke's 65-56 win over Emory & Henry Saturday, moves the Quakers (15-5, 12-3 ODAC) into a first-place tie with Emory & Henry (14-6, 12-3 ODAC) in the league standings. Guilford won the first meeting between the two teams in January and visits the Wasps February 18.

The Quakers' fifth straight win extended their school record home winning streak to 23 games. Ranked fourth in this week's NCAA Division III South region poll, Guilford has won 11 of its last 12 games and 14 of its last 16 contests.

After leading by as many as 13 points in the first half, Guilford saw its advantage trimmed to 40-37 on Lynchburg's Shannon Newton (Williamsburg, VA/Bruton) third three-pointer of the game with 13:07 remaining. Keichline answered with a basket on the ensuing possession and added a three-pointer of her own during a 10-1 Guilford spurt that opened a 50-38 edge with 10:16 left. Lynchburg (12-7, 10-5 ODAC) drew no closer than eight points the rest of the way.

Lynchburg played its second straight game without rookie point guard Mandi Campbell (Charlottesville, VA/Monticello), who burned the Quakers for 27 points in the Hornets' 74-64 win in November. Lynchburg's leading scorer and passer, she suffered a fractured thumb last weekend and could miss another week.

Keichline made seven of 10 shots from the floor in Guilford's best shooting game in seven outings (44.6%). Guilford made 16 of 32 field goals in the second half, including both three-point attempts. Keichline added a game-high three blocks and shared team-high rebounding honors (7) with Hill. Junior guard Nicole McCrory (Charlotte, NC/East Mecklenburg) finished with 11 points and three steals.

Lynchburg's Lori Fletcher (Charlottesville, VA/Western Albemarle) led all scorers with 16 points on seven-of-11 shooting while senior center Erika Whitten (Charlottesville, VA/Western Albemarle) posted a double-double with 15 points and a game-best 13 rebounds. She also made four steals and had two blocks. Newton finished with 13 points and six boards.

Guilford entertains Randolph-Macon Woman's College Monday (02/10) night at 7:30 in an ODAC game rescheduled from January 28. The Hornets host Meredith Sunday (2/09) in a nonconference tilt postponed by Thursday's snowfall.
