Roanoke's men's lacrosse team improved to 6-5 on the season with a 22-3 win over visiting Guilford Wednesday afternoon in Salem, VA. The Maroons, who have now won 11 consecutive games over the Quakers, improve to 2-2 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The Quakers drop to 4-7, 0-5 in league play.
The Maroons owned an 8-0 lead before the Quakers recorded their first shot on goal. Roanoke's Dan Reed (Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington) opened Roanoke's scoring with a goal 34 seconds into the contest. The Maroons scored seven more times in the first period, including three off the stick of junior Joe Weeren (Winchester, VA/Winchester). Guilford's first shot of the game came with less than three minutes to go in the first, a shot that was stopped by Roanoke keeper John Cooper (Wildwood, MO/Lafayette). Cooper stopped both shots he faced in the first half. Kris Davis (Parkton, MD/Hereford) scored two man-up goals for Roanoke in the first 15 minutes of action.
The Maroons held the Quakers without a shot in the second period and led 15-0 at the half. The Quakers got on the board early in the third period on a goal by sophomore Josh Miller (Princeton, NJ/Princeton). Roanoke had just killed off a 30-second penalty to start the half, but before it could get its man out of the penalty box and into the play, the Quakers were able to beat Roanoke reserve keeper Tim Morse (Santa Fe, NM/Tabor). Miller tallied the next goal of the game to make the score 15-2 in Roanoke's favor, but the Maroons rattled off the next five goals to take a 20-2 advantage.
Roanoke's Bryan Daddio (Syosset, NY/Syosset) scored a game-high four goals for the Maroons, while Weeren added three goals and two assists. Junior Andy Bonasera (Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington) scored twice and helped on three goals. Ross Sanner (Columbia, SC/Hyde School) had two scores for Roanoke, giving him four in two games. Chris Jones (Falmouth, ME/Governor Dummer), Ryan Burrows (Hunt Valley, MD/Dulaney), and Mike Mathis (Alexandria, VA/Annandale) all scored their first goals of the season.
The Maroons host Randolph-Macon at 2:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon (04/13) in Salem. The Maroons are looking to earn an ODAC Tournament berth and their 26th consecutive win over the Yellow Jackets. Guilford meets Haverford in a non-conference game Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at the Sandy Spring (MD) Friends School.
