Virginia Wesleyan Rallies for ODAC Men's Lacrosse Win at Guilford

Greensboro, NC (03/31/01) -- Junior attackman Bill Lingo (Rehoboth, DE/Cape Henlopen) scored four goals and three assists to lift visiting Virginia Wesleyan past Guilford, 13-7, in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's lacrosse contest Saturday. The loss extends Guilford's ODAC losing streak to 48 games, dating to 1993.

The Quakers (4-3, 0-2 ODAC) jumped out to a 5-1 lead on the second of three goals by senior midfielder Matt Synowiez (West End, NC/Easton (MD)) early in the second quarter. Virginia Wesleyan (5-3, 1-1 ODAC) recovered to score the next seven goals over two periods and went up 8-5 on a Paul Pavon (Virginia Beach, VA/Cape Henry) extra-man goal with 11:51 left in the third quarter. Guilford drew no closer than two goals the rest of the way.

Special teams and faceoffs proved the difference in the Marlins' win. Virginia Wesleyan scored on its first six extra-man chances and finished with seven man-up tallies in 10 opportunities, three by Lingo. The Marlins' man-down unit killed off seven of nine Quakers' extra-man chances, including a three-minute non-releasable penalty on Pavon early in the fourth quarter. Pavon was penalized for using an illegal stick after scoring 40 seconds into the period. The goal was disallowed upon discovery of the illegal stick.

The Marlins won 15 of 24 face-offs, including nine of 11 in the decisive second half. Senior midfielder Jack Lingo (Rehoboth, DE/Cape Henlopen) led the way with 12 wins in 16 draws.

Marlins' senior attackman Art Huger (Lexington, VA/Rockbridge County) scored three goals and two assists and sophomore midfielder Jay Smith (Babylon, NY/Stony Brook) added two scores and two helpers in the win.
