MAROONS HOLD ON TO DEAL GUILFORD WOMEN FIRST HOME LOSS

Box Score

Greensboro, NC (02/13/01) -- Visiting Roanoke staved off a late Guilford rally for a 56-55 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's basketball win Tuesday night. The loss marked Guilford's first home setback in nine games this year and moved the Maroons (15-6, 13-4 ODAC) within a half game of the Quakers (16-6, 14-4 ODAC) for third place in the ODAC standings.

Guilford junior guard Erin Beacham (Atlanta, GA/Lovett School) made the first of two free throws with 26 seconds left and again with two seconds remaining to draw the Quakers to within one point on two occasions. Guilford got the ball back with one second left after Beacham's second miss on an alternating possession call. After a Guilford time-out, Roanoke junior forward Jill Quesenberry (Willis, VA/Floyd County) tipped Beacham's in-bounds pass under the basket as time expired to preserve the win.

Senior guard Holly Weber's (Stuart, VA/Patrick County) two free throws capped a 16-4 Maroons' run and gave the guests a 51-37 edge with 5:31 left. Sophomore guard Katrina Williams (Salem, VA/Glenvar) scored seven of her game-high 16 points and Roanoke held Guilford to two of 10 field-goal shooting during the run.

Williams' follow basket after her own miss with 5:47 left marked the Maroons' final field goal of the game. Roanoke missed both field-goal attempts and preserved the win by making seven of 10 free throws in the final 5:47. Senior forward Suzanne Webb (Narrows, VA/Narrows) scored eight of her 14 points in the second period, including one of two free throws with eight seconds left to give Roanoke a 56-54 lead.

Guilford freshman guard Kate Goodman (Salisbury, NC/West Rowan) tallied 10 of her team- and career-best 14 points in the second half. She helped the Quakers rally with three of her game-high five steals in the final period. Beacham finished with 12 points.

Roanoke junior center Crystal Barrett (Roanoke, VA/Northside) scored nine points and had a game-high nine rebounds.

The win gives the Maroons a 22-5 lead in the season series and marks Guilford's second home loss in the last two years. The Quakers entered the game winners of 19 of their last 20 home tilts.
