Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Guilford College men's soccer team (1-5-3, 0-1-1 ODAC) battled Johnson & Wales University - Charlotte (3-4-2, 1-0 C2C) Thursday night at OrthoCarolina Sports, falling to the Wildcats, 2-1.
Johnson & Wales held a slight advantage in the offensive statistics, outshooting Guilford, 11-7, while both teams recorded three shots on goal. The Wildcats also held a 5-1 edge in corner kicks, while Guilford finished with 17 fouls compared to 15 for Johnson & Wales.
Chase Lewis (Fayetteville, N.C.) recorded Guilford's lone goal of the night, scoring once on one shot on goal. Kris Saborit (Barcelona, Spain) led the Quakers with two shots and added an assist, while Manu Diaz (Madrid, Spain) and Matthew Parker (Madison, N.C.) each recorded one shot on goal and one shot, respectively. In goal, Xavier Porter (Belmont, N.C.) recorded one save in 45 minutes of action, while Ildis Vital-Peraza (Vienna, Va.) played the opening 45 minutes.
Johnson & Wales opened the scoring in the 28th minute when Dominik Danko found the back of the net to give the Wildcats a 1-0 advantage. Guilford responded just over six minutes later when Saborit connected with Lewis, who scored his first goal of the season to even the match at 1-1. The score remained tied heading into halftime.
The Quakers and Wildcats battled throughout the second half, with both teams looking for the go-ahead goal. Johnson & Wales held Guilford without a shot on goal during the opening portion of the half, while Porter made a save to keep the match tied.
Johnson & Wales ultimately broke the deadlock in the 81st minute when Niklas Seguin converted a penalty kick to put the Wildcats ahead, 2-1. Guilford continued to battle in the final minutes, but was unable to find the equalizer as Johnson & Wales held on for the victory.
The Quakers are back in action on Saturday, October 3, when they travel to Harrisonburg, Va. to take on Eastern Mennonite University. First kick is set for 4:00 PM.
