Men's Soccer Season Ends in ODAC Quarterfinal Against Lynchburg

Quakers battle shorthanded against Hornets in 3-0 championship setback

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Guilford College men's soccer team traveled to face the University of Lynchburg on Saturday evening for the quarterfinal round of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Men's Soccer Championship. The eighth-seeded Quakers (4-9-5, 3-3-3 ODAC) took on the top-seeded Hornets (12-1-4, 6-0-3 ODAC), battling throughout the contest before ultimately falling, 3-0, and bringing their postseason run to a close.

For Guilford, Sam Bayer (Lakeville, Minn.) played all 90 minutes in goal, recording seven saves against the Hornets' 10 shots on target. Sebastian Urgiles (Burlington, N.C.) and Camden Taylor (Roanoke, Va.) each registered a shot on goal, while Jairo Medel Penaloza (Winston-Salem, N.C.), Jaykob Garbia (Copenhagen, Denmark), Ken Vasquez (Pittsboro, N.C.), Chris Hercules (Greensboro, N.C.), Manu Diaz (Madrid, Spain), and Rafa Albesa Boix (Castellon De La Plana, Spain) also contributed shots for the Quakers.

Lynchburg's offensive attack was led by Saul Lopez Coreas, Chris Bovo, and Kohlby Wilson, who each found the back of the net. Matthew Viscuso paced the Hornets with three shots, while Lopez Coreas and Wilson each added four. Stefan Kapitanov recorded two saves to earn the shutout.

Statistically, Lynchburg held the advantage in several offensive categories, outshooting Guilford 22-8, including a 10-2 edge in shots on goal. The Hornets also recorded six corner kicks compared to none for the Quakers, while Guilford committed 19 fouls to Lynchburg's 13.

The Quakers battled the Hornets through the first half of play, after letting up the first goal in the ninth minute of play. An unassisted shot to the lower left corner of the net by Lopez Coreas gave Lynchburg the early advantage over GC. The teams battled aggressively, with the Quakers holding seven shots through the first 45 minutes of play to the Hornets' nine, one more of which found its way past Bayer in the 35th minute. Aggressive play continued as Albesa Boix received a red card in the 37th minute, forcing the Quakers to fight the rest of the battle man-down. Despite the disadvantage, GC found three good looks, between Huelves Diaz, Hercules, and Medel Penalize before the half-ending whistle.

The Quakers returned to the pitch for the second half down two goals and facing the challenge of playing a man down. Lynchburg continued to apply pressure, forcing Bayer into several saves, including back-to-back stops on Wilson in the 67th minute. Guilford worked to stay within reach, with Jaykob Garbia putting a shot over the crossbar early in the half, but the Hornets continued to control possession and generate opportunities. Lynchburg eventually added its third goal in the 84th minute, as Wilson found the back of the net off assists from Izaack Cruz and goalkeeper Stefan Kapitanov to extend the lead to 3-0.

Despite Bayer's seven saves and the Quakers' efforts to remain competitive shorthanded, Guilford was unable to find the back of the net before the final whistle. The loss brings the Quakers' 2026 season to a close.
