PENFIELD, N.Y. – Recording 17 holes of superb golf on day one,
Evan Mendyk (Summerfield, N.C.) suffered a difficult finish and could not recover on the second day, ultimately missing the cut at tied for 174
th, and seeing his season conclude in the NCAA Division-III Men's Golf Championships at Midvale Country Club and Cobblestone Creek Country Club on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The graduate student had a bit of a rocky start at the event. Getting sent to Cobblestone Creek with a noon tee time for the rolling start on Tuesday, he needed a couple of holes to find his footing. Heading to the back-nine to begin, he posted a couple pars then a trio of bogeys over the ensuing four holes before he got hot. Birdies on 16 and 17 got him to just one above at the turn before another sub-par hole brought his score even after the first tee. A couple of bogeys on the fourth and fifth flags were not too worrisome as he also contributed five more pars and sat comfortably in the top-35 through 17 holes of brilliant golf. Unfortunately for Mendyk he would experience an absolutely brutal finish. On the par-four ninth pin, he would record nine strokes (+5), setting him back in a major way and dropping him 100 spots in the solo standings, completing day one at seven-over and tied for 135
th.
Requiring near-perfect golf at Midvale Country Club in an effort to recover on Wednesday, he would not be able to do so. With the format getting swapped to a shotgun start at 8:00 AM due to impending weather, the Guilfordian would see his day start right at the first tee, posting a bogey to begin the day. Pars straddled a birdie on three before more trouble came with double-bogeys on the fifth and seventh pins. He curbed the draught with a birdie on the par-five eighth hole before registering another bogey to stand at +4 at the turn. Another two-above on ten sealed his fate and once the snowball got moving, he struggled to get back in it, with two more double bogeys on 13 and 14. A couple of pars and a couple of bogeys completed the second day at +12.
All told, it was not worthy enough to land within the top-six individuals who are not advancing as a part of the top-18 teams to continue playing the final two days in New York. Overall, he finished with a score of 163 (+19) and tied for 174
th place.
The final member of the team competing, this concludes the tremendous 2025 season for Mendyk and the men's golf team.
