GREENSBORO, N.C. – Ashley Belnap (Winston-Salem, N.C.) represented the Guilford College women's tennis team by getting recognized on the Collegiate Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District team for her performance on and off the court, as announced by the organization on Tuesday.
In order to qualify for the honor in tennis, student-athletes must be at least an academic and athletic sophomore, maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher in the classroom. Meanwhile, a nominee must be in the lineup for 70% of the team's total competitions. No more than four student-athletes may be a nominee in tennis per school, per gender.
The Quakers' top option this season in both singles and doubles, nearly exclusively alongside
Erika Mendez (Asheville, N.C.), Belnap competed in all 18 events for GC. Playing out of the top flight of singles in all 16 duals for Guilford this season, she finished 5-12 overall individually overall including 4-6 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action. Paired with Mendez for 16 of her 17 doubles clashes, she went 6-11 with a partner this year and 2-8 in league play. The most impressive part of her season, however, was likely her leadership as the Guilford's women's tennis squad saw a breakthrough year going 7-9 overall, good for the team's highest win total since 2013. The Quakers also cracked the ODAC Tournament field for the first time in nearly a decade although they did fall to second-seeded Averett University in the opening round to halt their first conference tournament bid since 2016. Academically, the junior owns a 3.67 cumulative GPA while studying Business Administration at GC.
