GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Guilford College women's tennis team (10-6, 6-4 ODAC) concluded its regular season on a high note Sunday morning, defeating Shenandoah University (7-10, 5-5 ODAC) 4-3 at the McMichael Courts. The victory ensures the Quakers finish the conference slate with a winning record heading into the postseason.
Shenandoah gained the early upper hand by taking two out of three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. At the No. 1 spot, the duo of
Carolina Dirk (Port Aransas, TX) and
Ashley Belnap (Winston-Salem, N.C.) provided a bright spot for Guilford with a 4-1 victory over Atlee Hilliard and Olivia Guzzo.
Guilford roared back in singles play, winning four of the six flights to clinch the match.
Dirk continued her masterclass at No. 1 singles, defeating Hilliard 6-1, 6-0. With the win, Dirk moves to a perfect 15-0 on the season. She becomes just the second player in program history to finish a regular season undefeated in singles play.
Following her Senior Day win yesterday, Belnap remained sharp at No. 2, earning a decisive 6-1, 6-2 victory over Erin Talko.
The Quakers secured the team win thanks to dominant performances from
Chandler Sizemore (Sandy Ridge, N.C.) and
McKenna Merritt (Dobson, N.C.). Sizemore took a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 3, while Merritt followed suit with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 4.
While today's match marks the end of the regular season, the Quakers look ahead to the ODAC tournament. Stay tuned for official word on seeding and postseason schedules as they become available.
