Mendyk Leads Men’s Golf to 6th Place at Gate City Invite

Senior posts career-best showing competing against some of nation’s best

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Continuing his strong start to the new season, Evan Mendyk (Summerfield, N.C.) tied for 8th individually and shot a career best 209 (-7) across the three-round Gate City Invitational, hosted by Greensboro College at Forest Oaks Country Club, leading the Guilford College golf team to a tie for 6th place on Monday and Tuesday.

Competing as one of 12 nationally ranked programs at the event, GC finished with a team score of 858 (-6) placing evenly with Carnegie Mellon University and Oglethorpe University. Top ranked team in the nation, Methodist University, claimed the top spot at the tournament at 29-under with a team score of 835 followed by Washington & Lee University with a score of 841 (-23) and Emory University who swung 846 (-18).

Mendyk beat his previous best for a three-round score of 213 and excelled on the par fours particularly his middle round during which he shot a 68 (-4), the best by any Quaker over the course of the tournament. He also finished on a high note with a score of 69 (-3) on Tuesday's lone trip through the 18, with that mark being tied for the second-best round by a Guilford golfer.

James Alden (East Northport, N.Y.) followed for GC who tied-23rd with a score of 215 (-1), straddling a pair of rounds in which he finished two-under at 70, on either side of a 75 round on Monday afternoon.

Oliver Paddon (Hingham, Mass.) had the best start for any Quaker, beginning the competition with a 69 (-3) opening round, but encountered a little more trouble his second time through, ending the meet swinging 218 strokes (+2) and tied-45th.

Andrew Perry (Fuquay Varina, N.C.) finished strong with a 70 (-2) final trek through the course, completing at 220 (+4) and tied-59th. Rounding out the Quaker scorers at five-over and tied-62nd was Parker Cumbea (Fuquay Varina, N.C.) who wrapped up the Gate City Invitational with 221 swings.

Thomas McNally (Charlotte, N.C.) and Braeden Gillen (Holly Springs, N.C.) also took part in the tournament, playing as independents. McNally was one of the many competitors tied with Cumbea for 63rd, recovering from a tough first day on the course with a strong two-under, 70-score on the final 18 to post a 221 (+5) total. Gillen finished with a 224 (+8) total after breaking-even across the 36 played on day one before having trouble on the final round.

Guilford is back in action on Sunday October 13th through Tuesday October 15th to compete in the Golfweek October Classic hosted by Golfweek.
