Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Guilford College men's soccer team hosted Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opponent Shenandoah College at Appenzeller Field on Saturday morning, falling to a score of 4-1.
The Quakers fall to 3-10-1 overall and 0-7-1 in ODAC play. Shenandoah , currently 6th in the conference, improves to 9-5-2 overall and 4-2-1 in ODAC competition.
Chris Kelley (Lexington, N.C.) got the start in goal for Guilford, securing three saves among the seven shots he faced, moving to 2-9-1 in net. Nathan Lynch improves to 5-3-1 for Shenandoah, making four saves among the five Quaker shot attempts.
Adrian Pineda (Graham, N.C.) led the Quakers with three shots, two of those on target.
Riley Copeland (West End, N.C.) registered two shots, with both being on frame.
Dani Santos (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) and
Chris Hercules (Greensboro, N.C.) contributed one shot each, with Hercules placing one on target.
Nathan Yared led the Hornets in the scoring category, securing two goals off three shot attempts. Chinedu Ikem and Gabe Eckenrode each contributed a goal to the Hornets' efforts. Kyle Welch assisted on two goals, Niclas Vavra and Ikem both shared an assist on the first goal of the match.
The Hornets struck first in the 9th minute when a sequence of passes in the midfield opened up space on the left wing. A through ball found the winger, who cut inside the box and passed to Yared, who finished first-time with his left foot to give Shenendoah a 1-0 lead. The goal was assisted by Vavra and Ikem.
Guilford has a chance to equalize in the 27th minute after being awarded a corner kick. The ball bounced out to the top of the 18', where Hercules lined up a shot, but was comfortably saved by Lynch.
In the 32nd minute, Shenandoah doubled its lead after being awarded a free kick just outside the box. A lobbed pass from Welch found Eckenrode at the penalty spot, and Eckenrode headed the ball into the back of the net for the Hornets' second goal.
The Quakers nearly pulled one back five minutes into the second half when a pass from the midfield found Pineda, who executed a pair of skilful dribbles before unleashing a shot from the left side of the box, but lynch was up to the task and made the save.
The Quakers finally got on the board in the 56th minute. After Copeland was fouled at the top of the box, Guilford lined up for a free kick. Hercules played a clever soft pass to Copeland, who was positioned right beside the wall. Copeland hit the ball first-time, sending it into the top right corner to cut the deficit to 2-1.
However, Shenandoah restored their two-goal advantage in the 65th minute after being awarded a penalty for a handball in the box. Ikem stepped up and calmly converted from the spot to make it 3-1.
The Hornets sealed the match in the 70th minute with a well-worked buildup from the midfield. A pass from Welch found Yared at the penalty spot, and he slotted his second of the match, securing the Hornets' 4-1 victory.
Guilford travels to Averett Universtiy on Wednesday, October 23, in search of their first ODAC win. Kickoff is slated for 7 PM.
