Setbacks to Lynchburg End Quaker Softball Season

LYNCHBURG, Va. – A series of setbacks to Lynchburg, by scores of 4-1 and 6-0, in the opening round of the ODAC softball tournament ended the Guilford season on Saturday, May 1st.

GAME 1: Lynchburg 4, Guilford 1

The Quakers (10-11-1) opened the game by putting Kylie Richardson on base after a field error. Richardson moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and eventually to third on a passed ball. Ally Morales delivered a one-out single up the middle that resulted in the first run of the game.

Lynchburg answered with run in the home half of the first when Bri Hodges delivered a single to left centerfield that plated Karle Cundiff to bring the game to a 1-1 deadlock.

The score remained at one-all until the bottom of the sixth, when Lynchburg's Ashley Hailey reached base on a bunt single. Lexi Powell followed with a bunt single down the third base line, moving Hailey to second. A throwing error allowed Kayla Hugate to reach base and score Hailey for the go-ahead run.

Karle Cundiff singled to centerfield, scoring Powell for the third Hornets' run of the game and moving Hugate to third in the process. Hodges followed in the lineup and drove sacrifice fly to right that plated Hugate for the 4-1 advantage.

Guilford finished the opening game with five hits, including two from Grace Calus, who finished 2-for-3 from the plate. Lynchburg also had five hits in the game with Hailey finishing 2-for-2 from the plate with a run scored.

Katie McNeill (6-6) tossed six innings, allowed five hits, four runs and fanned two batters along the way. Emily Charlton (7-2) closed out the victory by allowing one run on five hits and making two strikeouts.

GAME 2: Lynchburg 6, Guilford 0

In contrast to the first game of the series, Lynchburg scored four runs in the first inning to establish the early lead. The Hornets opened with three straight hits, including a single to centerfield by Karle Cundiff, who finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs. Bri Hodges followed with a double to centerfield, scoring the tandem of Cundiff and Kayla Hugate for the 3-0 advantage.

The final run of the inning crossed the plate when Kaleigh Hackett, who hit a sacrifice fly to left that plated Bri Hodges for the 4-0 lead.

Still holding onto a 4-0 lead with one out in the bottom of the fourth, Gracie Dooley drove a double to right center that scored the fifth run of the game in the form of Hackett.

The sixth run of the game came in the fifth after Hackett singled to right field to score Cundiff from second for the final run of the game.

The Quakers received four hits, all from different sources, with a Faith Fennell hit resulting in a double. Lynchburg answered with nine hits, including two each from Cundiff, Hackett and Lexi Powell.

McNeill suffered the loss in the game after surrendering four hits in the first. Angela Sperandeo (2-4) earned the complete game victory after scattering four hits and one walk over seven innings.
