SALEM, Va. – The eighth-seeded Guilford College softball team (18-23-1, 8-12 ODAC) clashed in the ODAC Tournament in an elimination game against fifth-seeded Roanoke College (21-19, 12-8 ODAC), battling hard in all moments of action throughout the contest, falling just shy of taking advantage over the Maroons, 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Moyer Sports Complex.
Shiloh Gray (Lexington, N.C.) tossed a gem in her outing for the Quakers, her 55th career-complete game of 6.0 innings, allowing one earned run off eight hits, one walk, striking out seven. Unfortunately, falling short of the victory in a commanding effort, dropping to 6-7 on the year.
Baylee Compton drew the start for Roanoke in the circle, throwing a gem of 7.0 innings, surrendering no runs, off four hits, three walks, striking out one for the victory, advancing to 9-6 on the season.
Savannah Newton (Concord, N.C.) led the charge throughout the contest, batting 1-for-4 for the Quakers.
Brooke Goyings (Lake Villa, Ill.) followed suit in a 1-for-2 showing from a double in the fourth.
Kaley Mitchell (Lake Waccamaw, N.C.) kept Guilford in the game with a base hit off a bunt early in the fifth.
Nicole Drew (Raleigh, N.C.) bashed a late single in the seventh, slashing 1-for-2 on the day.
Heather McQueeney cruised to perfection, hitting 3-for-3 for the Maroons. Riley Shupe added on to Roanoke's tally with a 1-for-2 day. Allie Bell scored the lone run of the ball game, slashing 1-for-3 in the process.
In a start-to-finish pitcher's duel between
Shiloh Gray (Lexington, N.C.) of Guilford and Baylee Compton of Roanoke, Allie Bell for the Maroons logged the first run of the contest off her RBI single. This score would remain throughout the defensively contested clash, resulting in a 1-0 decision in favor of Roanoke.
Roanoke will advance to take on the fourth-seeded University of Lynchburg in an elimination game. This will conclude the Quakers' fantastic season to remember.
